Get Rid of System that Creates Food Bank Demand.

I might be alone in this – though this is doubtful – but isn’t this distasteful?

A Tyneside company is aiming to turn Black Friday into Give Back Friday with a donation to a food bank on orders received during the discounting period.

EthicalSuperstore.com will donate a grocery item to the Newcastle West End food bank for every order it receives over £30 on Friday.

The Gateshead firm is hoping to repeat the success of a similar offer it ran last year, when it donated a total of 1,576 grocery items worth more than £1,500 to the busy food bank.

Peter Leatherland, of EthicalSuperstore.com, said: “Black Friday has become synonymous with crowds of people clamouring to get discounted technology products at well-known high street stores and supermarkets, but we want to do something a little different.

“Our feel-good Friday provides customers with 20% off products as well as giving something back to the community through donations, helping those families who truly need it.

“We want to raise awareness of food banks, hopefully encouraging our customers to think about others and perhaps donate to their own local food banks and good causes whilst hunting for bargains during Black Friday.”

More in the Chronicle.

Nobody doubts the scale of the problem:

More than 500,000 three day emergency food parcels have been distributed to people in crisis in the first half of 2016/17 – over 188,500 to children.

Between April and September 2016, Trussell Trust foodbanks across the UK distributed 519,342 three day emergency food supplies to people in crisis compared to 506,369 during the same period last year. 188,584 of these went to children.

Trussell Trust CEO, David McAuley says: “As the number of emergency food parcels provided to people by foodbanks rises once again, it’s clear that more can be done to get people back on their feet faster.”

But why does it exist?

Oh Yes…

Benefit sanctions forcing people to use food banks, study confirms

Oxford University research shows link between sanctions and use of charity parcels, a pattern ministers refuse to accept

Guardian 27th of October.

This was Damian – ‘Gig economy’ – Green’s response (FT November the 16th),

Under the existing system, hardship payments are available to cover day-to-day living costs but for many jobseekers they cannot be claimed until 14 days after a sanction has been applied.

Only certain categories of people can claim those payments, for example if they have children or a long-term health condition. Mr Green’s initiative will add homeless people and those with a mental health condition — an estimated 10,000 — to those who can claim straight away.

We need sanctions, and I don’t agree with those who would abolish them,” he said. “But I am always keen to improve the system.”

If you want to reduce the demand for Food Banks start by getting Labour to make getting rid of sanctions a priority.

Abolish the Sanctions System!

  2. Tax credit error costs families with disabled children £4,400 a year

‘Gap in data feed’ led to thousands of families missing up to £20,000 – but payments will only be backdated to April

    The Guardian – Friday 25 November 2016 15.05 GMT

Thousands of families with disabled children have lost out on up to £4,400 a year in tax credits after an administrative blunder by the authorities.

The error in processing their claims meant an estimated 28,000 families whose children qualified for disability living allowance (DLA) during 2011-14 missed out on an additional tax credit premium of between £60 and £84 a week.

The government revealed in the autumn statement this week it has set aside £360m over six years to ensure these families receive child disability tax credits in future. However, the payments will be backdated only to April, meaning individual families may have lost out on entitlements totalling up to £20,000 over the past five years.

The non-payment of the tax credit premiums appears to have been a result of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) failing to inform HMRC about families’ eligibility for the award over a three-year period.

  5. You’ll be lucky. Labour have done nothing to oppose any of this. The lack of any real political opposition is a major part of the problem. With Labour MPs ordered to vote with the Conservatives again and again while these changes to the benefits system were being made.
They had so many 3-line whips, they must all have had stripes down their backs.
Remember the 44 rebels ? It’s not so long ago that Labour were lining up their own workfare schemes, backed with sanctions.
Even now, they are not prepared to touch the ordinary long-term unemployed.
Labour’s sudden concern for Daniel Blake, is based far more on the fact that he is portrayed as a sick man treated badly by the system, than the fact that he is unemployed.
Of course, it is good that at least the disabled are at last getting some attention to their situation.
However, the able-bodied unemployed, now firmly established as ‘skivers’ in the eyes of the general public, are still at the back of the queue.

    • Scotland wins battle to end voluntary work programme sanctions.

Holyrood can exempt Scots taking part from having benefits stopped or cut thanks to newly devolved welfare powers.

Unemployed Scots taking part in newly devolved, voluntary work programmes will not face sanctions, after the Scottish government won its battle with Westminster to exempt those taking part from having their benefits stopped or reduced.

The Scottish government’s minister for employability and training, Jamie Hepburn, welcomed this as “a great relief to individuals who have had to cope with this unnecessary stress and harm in the past”

      • How does that work though? Are claimants still going to be refered to a MANDATORY ‘work programme’?: “Voluntary!? Where did you hear that? Some daft web site? The ‘work programme’ is still a MANDATORY programme.” Will claimants still be threatened with sanctions: “If you don’t participate you WILL be sanctioned.” And who in their right mind would set foot in a ‘providers’ office of their own free one. Why would anyone give Ingeus, Working Links the business?

Obviously claimants are still going to be referred to these ‘voluntary’ programmes. It will be either that or thrice daily signing-on. In that case claimants could just not set foot in the provider’s premises for the full duration of the ‘work programme’. Of course ‘providers’ would still collect their referal fee.

    DNS – 24th Nov 2016

Disabled activists and academics have called for the release of an autistic man with learning difficulties who has been held in locked mental health institutions for seven years, against his and his family’s wishes.

The case of Eden Norris (pictured, with his mother and sister) was highlighted at the parliamentary launch of a new online educational resource, which itself focuses on how tens of thousands of people with learning difficulties were locked away in long-stay hospitals through much of the twentieth century.

The website tells the story of disabled campaigner and self-advocate Mabel Cooper, who was institutionalised in the 1950s, and kept in long-stay hospitals for more than 30 years, as a result of bogus assessments of her IQ.

Yes its a long video for some but its worth watching as it will give you some incite to how this has come about. If ants are in your pants at least speed the video to the points the guy Mark Blyth talks about.

I frankly could give you many videos like this as it didn’t all start 3 years ago, didn’t start when conservatives came to power or even the crash. This road we are all now walking started a lot further back and why such people have been able to predict outcomes based on solid facts your government dont use or ignore and never ever mention.

  11. There will always be sanction, penalties and punishments in social security provision, the real issue is that under the current draconian system sanctions are too easy to apply, apparently at the whim of junior civil servants, and are disproportionately, ridiculously severe. And let’s not forget that with Universal Credit every new applicant is effectively sanctioned for at least five weeks, based on the brazen lie that all new claimants have just left work with a full month’s of salary freshly paid to them to support them until they receive their entitlements, and denied any help or assistance whatsoever until the end of five to ten or more weeks while their application is processed and their payments made in arrears which is appalling.

The waiting period mentioned above for new UC claimants. basically a five to ten week sanction for a change in circumstances, coupled with fixed periods sanctions of two weeks, four week, twelve weeks or thirty-six weeks is factually horrendous. As more and more people end up on Universal Credit the DWP will have to own this blooming misery and do something about it.

    • Former Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith criticised its depiction of the benefits system, saying: “The film has taken the very worst of anything that can ever happen to anybody, lump it all together and then say ‘absolutely, this is life as it is lived by people.’ And I don’t believe that.”

Now if you notice or at the time when he did say this, he states “The film has taken the very worst of anything that can ever happen to anybody, lump it all together”. So instantly he intends not to be specific.
He goes on to say, “then say ‘absolutely, this is life as it is lived by people” Well instantly the power word here of note is “absolutely”. He could have said that without the use of the word so hes slyly if later backed into a corner or government providing the opportunity to use certain cases to say look, see and so lower public sensitivity towards those who did go exactly through that including even dying minus dropping dead in court that is rather than in hospital, the street and there homes.
He finishes with “I don’t believe that”, not this is not true but “I don’t believe that”. Now you can see by the sentence constructs throughout be it from the actual mind of IDS or his spin doctor, their very aware of the use of words and there concise definition so know the difference between belief and fact. This means hes only committing to what he thinks is the case rather than firmly backing what is the case.

Vague while assertive yet non committed. I think it says it all.

Its time to man up and face reality as even without the consideration of reaching your pension, the world as you know it has changed and is not going to go back to the way it was, well not unless billions die or start all over again with never before thought ideologies that is and to think its all because people cling to that which we call money.

Britain wasn’t the first to be divided nor is it the last so to worry about a point in time you have yet to reach is futile to say the least. 21. ‘Record number’ of prison suicides in England and Wales

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38126646

Notice how government were quick to cite mental illness despite no one else saying it ?

This idea people have to be mentally ill to take there life really should stop. Now i dont doubt there are people with such an illness that did but having enough hardly constitutes as being mentally ill. We only have to consider assisted suicide to know that.

I also couldn’t help but laugh once again about drug testing the convicted on first going into prison. There’s absolutely no law that give government or prisons the legal right to carryout such a test without EXPRESS CONSENT. It makes no difference if your convicted or not meaning this government would have to draft one and that my people is a very slippery slope if any member of public does not react to such a suggestion let alone action.

As it stands besides while using heavy machinery and diminished responsibility, the government has no legal jurisdiction over your insides. We have to be very careful here as already our government despite our wishes and direction have ignored us public and legally invaded our exterior life, the snooper charter as a prime example, non nonchalantly handing out our non personal data like confetti another. You see you cant under any guise legally justify doing such to prisoners without the same being equally so for a person who is not a convict. What im saying is, today its a drug test on cons, tomorrow it will be submitting a member of public to a particular treatment/test next like for instance you cant claim benefits if you dont take and pass a drugs or alcohol test (already suggested) to you cant have a job if you dont take a drug and alcohol test prior to being offered a job or a worker cant have sick pay and can be sacked if they dont go to occupational health.

PLEASE DON’T FORGET WORKERS THEY SAID THE WELFARE CUTS WERE TO INCENTIVIZE THE UNEMPLOYED, MAKE WORK PAY YET LATER MOVED TO PLACING SUCH THROUGH CONDITIONS ON ANY WORKER WHO CLAIMS ANY BENEFIT.

The point is one does not escape the other meaning this “it must stop” equally applies to the rhetoric used on the unemployed/disabled and ill as regardless of if true or not, its still a culture, a word even those sticking it to them have used.
