Coffey Celebrates Nice Little Earner for Tory MPs.

Tory MPs claim almost £3m in housing rent on expenses

Welfare secretary Thérèse Coffey, whose department runs the LHA system, claimed £1,885 a month.

Revelation comes at same time as government freezes housing allowance, which could drive many tenants into debt.

A spokesperson for tenants’ union Acorn said: “To commit to this [LHA] freeze at the same time as huge swathes of the government’s own MPs are claiming extortionate amounts on expenses to pay rent on second homes is disgraceful and perfectly demonstrates the contempt with which they treat low-income people in this country – particularly given many of these MPs are claiming these expenses for second homes at the same time as raking in profit from homes they are renting out to tenants, while already taking home salaries far beyond what most people could ever imagine.”

The Tory MP claiming the highest rent expenses is Helen Whately, minister for social care. Despite earning £113,612 as an MP and minister, she claimed £3,250 in housing rent from the taxpayer each month between April and November 2020 – £26,000 in total during those eight months.

If Whately claims £3,250 a month for the whole of 2020/21, she will receive £39,000 towards her rent during the financial year. This is higher than the estimated average annual pay of her constituents, the average full-time earnings in the UK, the average nurse’s salary – and over double the average full-time care worker’s pay in 2019/20.

Suffolk Coastal, Coffey’s Constituency, is within commuting range of London.

This is the background:

Benefits system increasing homelessness in London, research finds.

A report from Homeless Link, titled Homelessness and welfare benefits in London, found that both the frozen Local Housing Allowance (LHA) and the benefit cap mean people claiming benefits cannot afford the housing that is available in the capital.

The report notes that the number of single people claiming Universal Credit in London increased by 88% between March, when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the UK, and August last year.

Meanwhile, an analysis found that 24 of the 32 boroughs in London do not have enough shared private rented accommodation to house those claiming the housing element of Universal Credit or housing benefit.

Across those 24 boroughs, only 54% of shared private rented accommodation would be affordable to those claiming benefits for their housing, the analysis found.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, chancellor Rishi Sunak reversed a multiyear freeze on the LHA rate, which determines how much housing benefit private renters receive, to ensure benefits covered the lowest third of rents in a local area.

  4. It can be a nice little earner being an MP. Look at the allowances and expenses that they get. It’s not so long along go that they we had the expenses scandal. When they were found to be claiming money for duckponds, stables and moat clearance. This wasn’t just a one-off, generations of MPs had claimed for similar expenses. It was just that this long-standing tradition, was unexpectedly brought to public knowledge.

  5. Housing represents probably the most expensive cost that people have to meet and so freezing LHA will convulse the lives of millions. The freeze is really an awful thing to do at the best of times but at the worst of times it will spell disaster for many. No one can pretend any more that there’s plenty of gainful employment out there if people want it and if they fall behind with things like rent and such it’s mostly their fault for being too lazy. When the effects of this catastrophic social policy eventually manifest themselves the Tories will be hard pressed to spin it however they try.

  7. Signing-On At The House of Lords

Enter two Noble Lords, to their right stands a Footman in wig and knee breeches. He is standing besides an antique desk. On the desk is a large leather-bound register, an ancient iron-bound wooden chest, and a quill pen and inkwell.
The Footman: ” Good day your Lordships”, he bows to each in turn.
Lord D. ”Good day Palmer, we have come to sign-in for today .”
Lord P. ”However we will not be staying for the debate.” He smiles briefly at Lord D.

The Footman bows, and opening the register, takes the quill pen, dips it in the inkwell, and gives it to Lord D.
who accepts with a cultured dignity. The product of generations of careful breeding.
Lord D. signs the register, and offers the quill pen to Lord P. , but not before carefully dipping it in the inkwell. So that Lord P. is not incommoded in any way whatsoever.
Having supervised the signing, the Footman goes to the money chest. It opens with the creaking of time-worn hinges. The box is lined in a deep red velvet, and inside can be seen rows of leather pouches. Each contains the sum of £323 pounds sterling. Taking a pouch in each hand, the Footman bows, and gives one pouch to Lord D., and the other to his companion, Lord P.

Lord D. ” Thank you Palmer.” He turns to Lord P. ” Just time for lunch at the club ?”
Lord P. ” Lead on my dear fellow. and did I tell you about my new Purdey ? Absolutely first-rate, a little
light at first, but once you get used to it…..”

    They exit, conversing together.

There was a time you could gather up a carrier bag full of fresh vegetables that had fallen off the stalls in the market, or fallen out of the vans into the gutter, the odd onion here, the odd potato there, a few sprouts that had been dropped, a carrot under the counter not yet trodden on. But it came to pass that the local fresh market had security men who would sweep such unwanted escapees into a small pile and stand guard preventing anyone from taking it. How times have changed. I also remember people retrieving outdated salmon sandwiches from M&S skip before they cottoned on to it and paid security men to stop people from doing it by puncturing packages and pouring blue dye on things so you couldn’t eat them. That’s going back 25 yrs ago or more.

  17. 12 Apr 2021
PCS has condemned the decision to fully reopen jobcentres today warning that it will increase the likelihood of avoidable Covid-19 infections.

Pre-lockdown opening hours for jobcentres will resume allowing a huge increase in face-to-face appointments for people to claim Universal Credit and other benefits.

However, the union has said that the move unnecessarily risks further outbreaks of Covid 19 and pointed out that DWP staff were delivering services to claimants successfully, working from home.

PCS are clear that the vast bulk of the interviews now expected to be done face to face can still be carried out remotely, and fear the real driver for targeting 18-24 year old UC claimants and customers in receipt of JSA back in to jobcentres, is less about providing much needed support to customers and more about reinstating the previous labour market and conditionality regime which saw thousands sanctioned, having their benefits removed.

The government’s instruction for civil servants to work from home if they can, is also still in place.

PCS said DWP management had ignored their concerns over potential Covid outbreaks, and the union added that its members would now consider all options, including taking strike action.

General Secretary Mark Serwotka said: “This reckless move by Ministers is wholly unnecessary and risks putting both claimants and job centre staff in harm’s way.

“DWP staff have been doing an incredible job delivering key services such as Universal Credit and helping those most in need, access the assistance they require, throughout the pandemic.

“It is counterproductive and arrogant for ministers to risk staff and the wider public’s health by resuming normal jobcentre opening hours before the vaccine is fully rolled out and when these services are being successfully delivered from home.

“The anger of our members is palpable and we are not ruling out strike action, until a just settlement is found.”

    April 12, 2021 at 10:19 pm

    • @trev- The DWP are paranoid that people might be claiming benefits, without doing any proper jobsearch.
They no doubt see the last year without personal appointments, as some sort of benefit disaster.
But they are now putting suspicion before safety, with this premature opening of Jobcentres.
Not only the safety of the claimants, but also of their own Jobcentre staff. As the PCS union has pointed out.
You have to ask which is more important ? Lives or Claimant Commitments ?

      Jeff Smith

      April 12, 2021 at 11:47 pm

      • But they must know that given the circumstances peoples’ jobsearch is severely curtailed and limited by all sorts of related factors; the lack of jobs, closure of businesses, further job losses, lockdown parameters and hygiene concerns, actual illness, limited access to internet, library and Jobcentre closures, etc.
I think it’s more about not losing their grip of fear and restating their stamp of authority upon people, and that is both sinister and nasty, they don’t want the pandemic to undermine the regime IDS established for the Tories over the Working Class. Bloody Class War again.

In the TESCO supermarket all shoppers and staff seemed to be masked but in the barber’s and a hairdresser’s salon neither the staff or customers were and there was a big crowd drinking outside a pub unmasked and not socially distancing either. How can such behaviour not cause an increase in coronavirus infections in the population? The only question really is how big the next surge will be and how long before its presence is felt? The people I saw yesterday were behaving as if the contagion was gone altogether which is far from the truth.

The PM says he cannot see any reason to change the roadmap out of lockdown at the moment, but urges caution, saying that people must continue to “do the basic things” to get there.

  21. I went past my local library this morning. A dozen or so people waiting to get in, supervised by a staff member. A notice was up saying they were operating on restricted capacity due to Covid-19. And after this number was reached, people would only be allowed in one at a time, as others left the building.
What happens in the case of a Jobseeker in the queue, who has booked his single hour of internet access ?
This queue wasn’t moving, so presumably you could stand there for half an hour or more. Maybe even the whole hour, and miss your slot altogether ?
For a Universal Credit claimant, already reduced to a maximum of 6 hours internet search per week. I can see trouble ahead, if they have to say they have managed only 2 or 3 hours per week.

  23. Legal Advice about extended services from 12 April
    13 Apr 2021
PCS has been in intensive talks with the DWP about their plans to extend the opening of all Jobcentres from Monday 12 April to deal face to face with 18-24 year olds, new claimants, JSA claimants as well as self employed proof of earnings, Interviews Under Caution (IUC) and National Insurance number (NINO) interviews.

PCS is opposed to this rushed extended opening because we do not believe that this work can be done safely due to Covid. In negotiations the union has pressed for a slower more cautious approach. PCS are opposed to this extension of face to face work and any compulsory return to the workplace for staff in non-front facing roles. The DWP have indicated that they intend to press ahead and we are therefore providing members with legal advice in an open letter to all PCS members working in DWP.

Returning to work and the Law
To be clear the purpose of the all member letter is merely to explain your legal rights. PCS is not advising members to refuse to work face to face.

    Meeting Scheduled with Permanent Secretary
Following pressure from PCS the Permanent Secretary has now agreed to meet PCS negotiators to discuss our concerns about DWP’s decision to extend opening in Jobcentres.

    Member’s action gets results
PCS issued an e-action link to members on Friday afternoon and have had nearly a thousand members submit the action to the Minister. This has already provoked a response from the Permanent Secretary this morning to all staff and the more members that complete the e-action the stronger the message sent to the Minister and senior leaders in DWP. Please ensure you click on the link below if you haven’t already done so. Please follow the link to e-action to Secretary of State Therese Coffey

If you are told to work in a jobcentre that you feel is unsafe and you want to talk to a PCS representative, please send an email to leeds@pcs.org.uk giving your name, membership number and telephone number. We will contact you as soon as possible.

PCS will continue to do all we can to protect your safety at work. Your union is here for you at this difficult time. We support any member who requires assistance.

      • I would have though that they would at least have waited until “customers” had been given the second booster vaccination to give maximum long lasting protection but no. I suppose the new Work Coaches are getting restless or the government fed up with paying them for their services and not getting them or similar. You will have to say, trev, what safety precautions were taken when you next visit the Jobcentre. I have been told that they now have perspex screening to protect the staff but don’t know if visitors will have to wear masks and such like. If I were you I would try to remain standing because goodness knows how many other will have sat on Jobcentre furniture coughing and spluttering before you.

I can only be a matter of time before UC claimants will soon be following in your footsteps.

        April 13, 2021 at 6:24 pm

      • Well we’ll see. I imagine they will be quick-fire appointments, in and out, how’s your jobsearch, here’s your next appointment and off you go. I will have had my second jab by then (this Thursday in fact) but many of the Jobcentre staff won’t have even had their first one. The whole thing is pointless of course and could easily be avoided. There’s no real need to see people in person and Benefits can be paid automatically without any problems, as the last 12 months have proven. Jobcentres, Work Coaches, Conditionality, jobsearch, all combine to make an utterly pointless and unnecessary charade for the sake of it.

    • The opposite is true:

Prof Whitty warned the virus “will find the people who have either not been vaccinated or where the vaccine has not worked.”

Even if you have been vaccinated no vaccine is 100% effective and some of the vaccinated, along with a larger number of the vaccinated, will die from covid and covid related illness this year. Whitty claimed that he was talking about 30,000 more such deaths during 2021, as the lowest estimate, based on mathematical modelling. So folks the best bet to stack the chips in your favour in my opinion is to be vaccinated ASAP even though the vaccination may not save you if it doesn’t work for you. (Most people will produce antibodies after getting the jab which offer 70% to 90%+ immunity to the common strains of the virus, which is one hell of a lot better than 0% immunity obviously whatever your age.) I’ve just booked my two injections online and will be having the first next week, almost certainly a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, at the nearest centre and looking forward to it without the slightest concern.

The best of British luck to all of those unable to be vaccinated or choosing not to be vaccinated.

Be careful and mind how you go.

deaths under the age of 45 is 101 with no underlining health issues so the odds dont look to good if you look at it that way does it.

dont forget they dumped these rna vaccines years ago because they did not work so no licence for use was ever given to use it in the last 30 years b4 now.

in 1992-1993 the population was less but the death rate that year was the same as last year and higher in others.

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/deathsintheukfrom1990to2020

if i gave anyone that list and told them one year was a pandemic what one would you choose.

and yet when you reach the time to retire and have to go to a hospital bed you will have a dnr notice stuck on ur ass they care that much.

same as all the old ppl freezing to death each year and a bbc goon banging on the door for the licence fee ect ect.

boris cant even operate a comb mancock could not even operate a washing machine and all they care about is self preservation the truth does not matter only the agenda of control and self gain from there corporation pals.

it is the same way the dwp work on lies bollocks and bullshit to con you in to doing this and that for the profit of others because you are there profit unit.

if they dont stop testing ppl then it will never end because when winter comes around again and a new strain of the flu pops up same as every year since 8000bc it will be locked down again based on cases so they can then get the emergency powers granted for another 6 months in September and get it passed again so they got the full 2 years they wanted in the first place.

while they have this power they are not accountable for there actions and can do what they want and push everything through with no debate on most of it not that matters with a labour lap dog doing as it is told because there all playing the same game self preservation.
