Boris Johnson Plans to Tackle Food Poverty.

Benefit Poverty to be Solved by Cheap Sugary Drinks.

Benefits have not risen – and have stayed at a declining pittance – for so long that barely a living soul can recall when you could buy a pints of Wallop, a twist of shag, and a mid-day plateful of liver and onions with your dole with enough over for a fish supper.

But while not talking about Universal Credit, or benefits, or unemployment, during his leadership contest Boris Johnson has our feeding and drinking interests at heart.

Tory leadership: Boris Johnson promises review of ‘unhealthy food taxes’

Boris Johnson has said he wants to examine whether levies on foods high in salt, fat and sugar are effective, and has vowed not to introduce any new ones until the review is complete.

The “sugar tax” on drinks came into force in April 2018, and a wider levy on all unhealthy foods is being considered to help tackle obesity.

Mr Johnson says he is concerned they unfairly target the less well-off.

Many a cynic will suggest that his plans include a special Brexit US chlorinated chicken, dunkin’ donuts, and cactus cooler diet as the base for DWP calculation on the food claimants’ need to eat (in the old days they produced a calculation on such things as part of ‘what you need to live on’).

Back in the world of tears we hear today.

Since Universal Credit came in the food bank has been packed: My Wigan Pier Story

Mirror.

As part of our Road to Wigan Pier project, eight decades after the publication of George Orwell’s essay, Coventry Food Bank project manager Hugh McNeill, explains how visitor numbers have soared since the introduction of Universal Credit.

  1. Telling the poor who couldn’t afford to nourish themselves properly or to buy bread to eat sugary cake didn’t work out too well for Marie Antoinette did it? Boris Johnson the next British Prime Minister? How the heck did we end up neck deep in stinking foetid shit like this for God’s sake?

  2. I wish somebody would ask Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt one question, namely: At the end of your time as Prime Minister will the number of people using food banks have increased from what it was when you came to power, as it has every year of the last nine years under Cameron and then May, or decreased under your watch?

  3. This is just another shameless attempt by Boris to portray himself as a lovable rogue.
Likes his food, got some weight problems. Just like any average voter really.
The BJ equivalent of Nigel Farage and his pint of beer.
By this time next week, Boris will be wearing a flat-cap, and eating pie and mash.

  4. Well that’s one thing, at least you’ll still be able to get cheap American pop to wash down the chlorinated chicken.
And when you get sick from obesity, can try out the new pay-as-you-go privatised
    health service.

You even pronounce ‘only’ like Jacob Ree-Mogg and the Queen does. No way you are getting the keys to No 10 or even re-elected with this phoney show. By the way, maybe you avoid ‘heavyweights’ such as Ian Dale and stick with Victoria Derbyshire where you can discuss ‘serious’ issues such as ‘upskirting’ to your hearts content 😀

  9. I suppose there is no point asking this question, but I’ll do it anyway.
What is the parliamentary Labour Party, going to do to help people on Universal Credit ?
The people who are going without food, the people who are homeless.
When are you Jeremy Corbyn, going to do something constructive about Universal Credit, other than looking like a miserable version of Father Christmas ?

    • They used to say they were going to scrap UC and replace it with something better. Last I heard the word was that Labour wanted to halt the roll out of Universal Credit and review it. (No mention about scrapping it.) I don’t think anybody really knows what Labour would really do about UC, or anything else really, if it managed to get elected. Since the party was polling 14% and was in forth place behind the Brexit party, Conservative party and Liberal Democrat party unless things change in a big way we won’t get the chance to find out because Labour is on course to lose the next election under Corbyn.

      • @ Jim, I agree 100%. They couldn’t win a church raffle with Corbyn in charge. It really annoys me when I hear him blithering on about minor issues, while doing nothing about much more important ones. Like Universal Credit, disability benefits, homelessness, child poverty, hunger and suffering, right here in the UK.
The latest big policy from Jeremy Corbyn ? ‘Foxes and the countryside must be protected from ‘bully-boy’ Tories’.
Jesus H.Christ Jeremy, what Labour planet are you on ?

It’s what he’s spent his life doing. He’s a backroom politician trying to be a leader.

        Alan M.

        July 6, 2019 at 12:51 am

      • When did Jeremy Corbyn ever actually make a decision? Seriously. Corbyn is a man of protest not solutions. He raises his voice, makes a lot of fuss and indulges in much tub-thumping but can anybody think of a single instance where Corbyn as a leader has taken a decision, announced it to the world, and stuck to it through thick and thin? Because I can’t. Not one. Not one single example since he became the leader of the Labour party.

  12. The woman, in her 50s, has come forward to this newspaper (Daily Mail), to expose the wrongdoing after becoming sickened at what she saw. With her voice quivering with barely controlled fury, she told us: ‘In all the years I’ve worked there, the level of fraudulent claims has never been this high, and instead of preventing them, we’re handing out the money and making it so easy.’
In a disturbing account that will shock every taxpayer, she revealed:
One man entered the names of three made-up children as Fish, Chips and Beans – yet still received his advance payment !

      • UC aids business inability to supply a decent hourly rate along with decent secure hours where travel costs are factored and or made tax deductible for all and not just the self employed.

UC isnt about the disabled who are unable to work, isnt about pensioners. Its only muddy water is ESA claimants unable to work which could be easily remedied by splitting it from the support group.

Then we can see UC for what it really is which is a rising indictment to the failure of UK business to financially provide proper wages, hours and employment for all and end this need for employee taxes and NI to prop this failure up.

    • It is certainly true that you can fiddle the advance payment since these are just put through without any merit or scrutiny of the claim. In our local office we just put these through via faster payments so that it hits claimants/fraudsters bank acount instantly. The actual claim is never followed up though so it is just electronically binned and the advance payment forgotten about. I could give you can idea of the type who are making these fraudulent claims but I would only get in trouble with ‘left-wing critics’.

      Jobcentre Insider

      July 8, 2019 at 11:02 am

    • This is the baked-in stupidity of the baked-in five week wait though. The easy solution to this is to scrap the five week wait for uc and revert back to the system of processing the claim there and then so it can be properly checked and scrutinised – then processing the payment there and then hence no need for advance payments. Fraudsters will always find a way to take advantage of the stupidity of the DWP and this needless delay coupled with no questions asked advanced payments is stupidity beyond belief!
