More Christmas Cheer for the Sanctioned.

Jobcentre Work Coach.

Jobless and disabled people could have benefits stopped on Christmas Eve under ‘tough new sanctions regime’.

The Independent reports.

Jobless and disabled people could be stripped of their benefits this Christmas under a strict new sanctions regime for the festive period, it has been claimed.

In an apparent hardening of the Government’s attitude to welfare, those who miss a job centre appointment, interview or work capability assessment in the immediate run-up to the holidays could now be told the news on Christmas Eve itself.

The Independent had previously reported the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) would be running a “business as usual” approach to Christmas this year, and was accused of taking a “Scrooge-like approach” to the season.

In new claims denied by the DWP, the SNP say this will be only the second year the approach has been taken, after a series of unwritten “special operations” were scrapped that previously protected claimants from having their Christmases ruined.

The party said concerns were raised by DWP staff themselves, who told the SNP they were made to call people up with bad news on Christmas Eve for the first time last year, and were unhappy they had to implement the alleged change in policy.

And there’s this from Wolverhampton Express and Star.

Homeless at Christmas: We’re a community on the streets – but it’s hard

‘Sometimes the police move me on saying I can’t beg but I’m not on benefits so how am I supposed to get money?

“They won’t give me benefits because I don’t have a home address so it’s a catch 22. If I had a roof over my head I would be alright.”

Scotty Parkin is one of the rising number of people who will find themselves living rough this Christmas.

An Express & Star investigation has discovered that there are almost 2,500 people recorded as being homeless in the Black Country and South Staffordshire – a rise of 13 per cent over the last five years.

Many are forced to sleep rough, including Scott who has been on the streets for a year.

The BBC is going to show a new programme on Boxing Day, mashing together around 3o of Dickens’ characters called Dickensian.

As somebody who’s read his London printer granddad’s complete set of Dickens I am not looking forward to what I will doubtless call a “period soap”.

In case to watch the world of Dickens I only have to walk around the streets of Ipswich and I bet I’ll see some of these sanctioned people.

  1. Discredited Maximus adds care inspections to DWP portfolio.

The care watchdog has been criticised for awarding a discredited outsourcing giant new contracts to manage the use of service-users as expert advisers in care homes and hospitals.

Two-thirds of the new contracts to run Experts by Experience – which pays people with experience of using care services to take part in Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections – have been awarded to Remploy.

Disability News Service has also learned that Remploy is offering disabled people who work as Experts by Experience under its contract about half the hourly rate they are currently earning under the programme.

Remploy, which will start delivering the Experts by Experience programme on 1 February 2016, was formerly controlled by the UK government but is now mostly owned by the US outsourcing company Maximus, which already has a huge chunk of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) contracts to provide employment support and assessment services for disabled people.

  3. Make up for benefit cuts by working 200 more hours, government says.

Department for Work and Pensions admits work allowance will fall under universal credit but people can ‘recoup the loss’

The Department for Work and Pensions has admitted that people will see cash losses to their in-work benefits under the new universal credit system and suggested they could make up for it by working an extra 200 hours a year.

But they won’t, they the paid employees (many of) will be laid off between now and next May (living wage) and replaced with forced labour, (work experience/workfare) & apprenticeships.

    • So DWPs idea of helping in work benefit claimants is to advise them a sum total of how many hours they need to work to make up the difference ?

Whats the point of telling a person something they can figure out for themselves.

Whats interesting though is its a silent acknowledgement of government that work is no longer fixed, that they expect the public’s working life to be turbulent which could well be true come the first round of Nat min rises. It demonstrates that this government expects a backlash of some sort as why create in work benefits conditions if you know by the first increase alone that many wont be entitled to claim it anymore ?

With jobs still insecure and lowly paid i wouldn’t be surprised if employers literally paid by the minute in the near distant future, well before technology causes the biggest shift in labor that is.

      • The Tories one shoe fits all idea just wont work as up until recently i worked a 38 hour week which included about 30 hours unpaid travel and i worked all over the country so apart from weekends never saw my home.

Now i was still entitled to tax credit even though i don’t claim it (isn’t worth the effort to jump through hoops for my own tax and NI contributions back) so putting me into this equation, what on earth is my adviser going to recommend for me exactly ?

How do i have the time to look for a better job while trapped in a hotel room with no computer at god knows at night, how when my DWP is closed at weekends and libraries are full do i look for work then, how will i attend interviews working hundreds of miles away from home, how will i survive what with being unpaid even if i could make an interview and that’s assuming my employer just doesn’t sack me for attending such. I could go on and on pointing out how DWP would MONUMENTALLY fail to help me improve my situation without causing me further financial losses, the very thing its suppose to improve ?

I mean on this basis alone i could disagree with any adviser advice as unreasonable as it would make me financially even worse off while carrying it out and could even land me being sacked.

Think about it: would taxpayers rather pay £4-6K per year to a benefit recipient, or £30K to house them in a PRISON? We need to be ALL OF US prepared to go to prison for our beliefs. That’s what all you jokers are pretending isn’t necessary. What you do to the Tories is say “well, I’m going to start an employment agency for those with Criminal Records, so people can not be so scared to stand up for their rights and risk getting a Criminal Record. I’m going to judge these potential employees on their merits and ACTUAL criminal history, NOT fascist-like blacklist them for life, merely for having fallen foul of the corrupt legal system. Whilst not ripping them off for half their generated income like other agencies..”
Well, that’s what those famed angry Poll Tax protestors weren’t scared of (not that the idiot UK populations’ short memories prevented the Tories sneaking it in under the name Community Charge, AKA Council Tax later-on).
Now, we have Big Brother, Database Culture, so are SCARED to fall foul of the more powerful CONTROL mechanisms that such technology has brought us. Orwell had many good points. Anyone up for a nationwide push to donate copies of ‘1984’ to all State Employees in the UK? It might make a difference, you know? The Purge on Film Four last night gave a prescient glimpse into the not too distant future. ‘The Purge’ – one day a year when all crime is legalised. 12 hours when the wealthy “purge” the “economically inactive” from society. 12 hours when the poor, weak, and vulnerable are hunted down and murdered with impunity: 12 hours when the sick and disabled are murdered in their homes. 12 hours when the homeless are dragged from their shelters and killed. 12 hours when the jobless are rounded up and executed. The Treasury’s decision to cap housing benefit at the level available for private rents makes many schemes unviable, according to the research carried out by housing providers.

The housing cap is part of a £12bn package of cuts from the welfare bill.

Give magistrates more leeway to turn around lives, US judge tells Gove.

Alex Calabrese says Britain could learn from his ‘problem-solving’ courts in Brooklyn – and the justice secretary seems to be listening.

The justice secretary has been urged to grant magistrates greater freedom in dealing with offenders so that they turn around lives rather than increase the prison population.

Judge Alex Calabrese, who presides over criminal courts in Red Hook, Brooklyn, met Michael Gove this month to expound on the pioneering US community courts he oversees. The 62-year-old New Yorker – who deals with addicts, serial shoplifters and cases of violence – was in London to encourage the justice secretary to transform British courts and boost rehabilitation rates.

Charles Dickens’ warnings about poverty are as relevant today as in 1843, when his classic Christmas novel was first published.

If Charles Dickens were alive today, he’d be living on a council estate with his seven siblings, a single mum and a daily struggle to make ends meet. His dad in prison for unresolved debt, he’d have left school early to support the family by working part-time at a high street shop, earning the minimum wage. And in between cigarette breaks, he’d find the time to write about issues that mattered to him including children’s rights, poverty and other social issues.

    Do you think ?

This is a prime example of the kinds of fallout people can expect from short termism. For ages the scientist said the sea would rise, the politicians even acknowledged it yet we ended up with piffle defenses because someone somewhere thought they could edge there bets.

So why am i talking about this on a welfare forum, well, because its high time we addressed the elephant in the room which is as this becomes the norm, people will begin to move inland. With an abundant house shortage already the case conglomerated within time a reseeding land space will only lend to the shortages in all things we currently suffer being exponentially made worse.

  28. MINNESOTA STARVATION EXPERIMENT

Some interesting quotes about the Minnesota Starvation Experiment:

“Within just a few weeks of the study, the psychological stress that affected all of the subjects became too much for one of the men, Franklin Watkins. He had a breakdown after having vivid, disturbing dreams of cannibalism in which he was eating the flesh of an old man. He had to leave the experiment. Two more subjects also suffered severe psychological distress and episodes of psychosis during the semi-starvation period, resulting in brief stays in the psychiatric ward of the Minnesota university hospital. One of the men had also reported stealing scraps of food from bins”.

“…democracy and nation building would not be possible in a population that did not have access to sufficient food”.

    • He calls his political creed the “new paternalism”. In policing, it amounts to zero tolerance. In schools, it is about instilling a regimented discipline. With employment, it is workfare. All revolve around the idea that popular opinion backs placing obligations to wider society above an individual’s freedom.

Which is why many do not comply, why should they.

  31. The Tories relentless assault on welfare benefits could plunge millions of more people into poverty, according to a left-leaning think tank.

An analysis of Tory welfare cuts by the Resolution Foundation and Landman Economics found that an extra 3.6 million people could be pushed below the breadline by Christmas 2030, including 1.9 million children.

The damning revelation shows that the number of children living in poverty is set to soar by a shocking 75% by 2030, unless the Government shows a change of heart and halts in attack on Britain’s poorest people.

It means that the number of children living in poverty will rise to 4.4 million in just fifteen years, around one-if-four (28%) of all children living in Britain.

The number of children living in “absolute” poverty is also expected to rise by 800,000 over the same period.

According to the report, the poorest 10% of Brits can expect their annual income to rise by just £90 a year, easily dwarfed by rising living costs, while the richest 10% will see their income boosted to the tune of an extra £1,600 each year.

    HT to Sian on JV

    http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/emily-thornberry/help-to-work-failure_b_8895406.html

the best ever description of the tosh that the work programme is all about is in that huffington article –

“Kevin Woods · Glasgow Caledonian University
the problem with these schemes and the entire Work programme in general is that by forcing jobseekers to attend them and allowing them to sanction participants you actually prevent them being effective.
Take two schemes doing the exact same thing, one A sanctions and the other B doesn’t, A keeps the participants for two years and gets paid for two years, B discovers that 50% of participants quit after a week claiming no help is being provided, A has no incentive to change and help people, B realises it needs to be better if it wants to be paid and makes improvements which result in more successes so its success rate increases to the 15% required, A doesn’t need to make improvements to get money and keeps to 5%.
If you allowed participants to quit once it becomes clear no job is available then it starts to work as the providers realise to keep people with them they need to hire 1/3 if they want to be kept on as partners
To provide a comparison imagine a university offers a course and discovers that only 5% of students get the degree at the end, wouldn’t they start to question the teaching methods to find out why they are not working,
can you imagine any other business model where customers are punished for refusing the product and there is no requirement for the product to actually work?”

Last year the UKs national debt was 1.4 trillion, its now over hundred billion more and its still months to go before the Tories mark there first year in office.

So this notion that the UK is doing well isnt the case when such an unpayable debt is included and still clearly escalating.

    • “Enigma” – I mentioned the “Minnesota Starvation Experiment” on here recently.

It is interesting to hear that Dr Ancel Keys who ran that experiment said “starved people can’t be taught democracy”. He also said “democracy and nation building would not be possible in a population that did not have access to sufficient food”

So much for the Tory claim to rebuild broken Britain of today!

Also of interest is the impact of the Minnesota Starvation Experiment on some of the “test subjects”. Some had nightmares about food. Many became depressed, anti-social, lethargic and irritable. Some stole food and one man cut off three of his fingers with an axe! Admissions to psychiatric hospitals increased. Remind you of anything happening in this country today?

Even more interestingly, it appears the Minnesota Starvation Experiment would not be allowed today because it would break the rules on FULLY INFORMED CONSENT of test subjects!
