Break the Election Silence: Fight Sanctions and Workfare!
No workfare. No sanctions. Whoever wins we will resist!
As the general election campaign gets underway we are already seeing politicians calling for more of the same policies. More workfare. More sanctions. Yet we know that these policies have been a total disaster. It is shameful that workfare and sanctions are supported by all the main political parties. This is why we are holding a week of action in the week before the election. We need your help to expose and challenge workfare and sanctions policies and the political lies that underpin them.
Workfare undermines paid jobs and wages and results in sanctions. It does nothing to improve the chances of people finding a job and exploits those forced to carry it out. Last year over half a million people had their benefits sanctioned. The number of benefit sanctions imposed by the DWP now exceeds the number of fines imposed by the courts. People are being left with nothing for up to three years. There is now overwhelming evidence of the harm being caused by sanctions. Sanctions are damaging the health of claimants and leading to hunger, homelessness and deaths.
Your actions have already had a huge impact in challenging these policies. Dozens of organisations have withdrawn from the schemes following public pressure. Over 500 voluntary sector organisations have now signed the Keep Volunteering Voluntary agreement to say they oppose workfare and sanctions and will not be involved. 25 councils have also said they will boycott the schemes. All this means it is getting harder and harder for the government’s private providers to find workfare placements. Hundreds of placements have been cancelled and your actions have made a real difference.
The week of action is a chance for everyone who opposes workfare and sanctions to demand an end to these cruel policies. However you can contribute join us to take action from 25 April – 2 May

Figures from the Trussell Trust, the biggest provider of emergency food aid with more than 400 food banks in the UK, will be seen as evidence that families on low incomes are not sharing in the benefits of economic recovery. The statistics could puncture the Conservatives’ optimism on the economy after official figures yesterday showed there are two million more people in work than in 2010, and 557,000 more than a year ago.
Labour will target David Cameron on food poverty, accusing him of being out of touch. The Prime Minister looked uncomfortable when questioned by Jeremy Paxman on the issue last month in the first of four TV election debates.
The number of people given three days’ emergency food by the Trussell Trust rose from 2,814 in the 2005-06 financial year to 61,468 in 2010-11, 346,992 in 2012-13 before jumping sharply to 913,138 in 2013-14 – including 582,933 adults and 330,205 children. Its figures for 2014-15 are due to be published on Wednesday and are expected to show a continuing rise despite the upturn in the economy.
The issue is also sensitive for the Conservatives because Trussell Trust surveys show that the most common reason for people being referred to it are delays in receiving state benefits. Changes to benefits also rank highly.
Last night Labour challenged Mr Cameron to sign up to a pledge to reduce the number who rely on food banks in the 2015-20 parliament. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Rachel Reeves, the shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said the 618 per cent rise in the number receiving emergency food aid from the trust in the past three years was “shocking”.

Something that does need addressing as I have yet to hear it said. If you are on a ”Zero Hours Or Flexible Hours Contract”. Can you claim Benefits / Council Tax Support for the hours you do not work. Would you be able to provide your local authority with a Statement Of Nil Income for the hours days you are not at work

We have seen news about people on ZH who have been evicted due to their being on ZH, so not enough working hours, but what about HB etc, we would like to assume (because they should) that those people are getting HB etc if they don’t work many hours but then if that’s the case why is it that some people if not most on ZH are being evicted.

I too had a job called “on call” years ago, It was the first time I had a job like it, it doesn’t take long to realize what this means, always ready to work because you know you have rent, bills and food to pay for, so always waiting for your employer to phone you – not fit for anyone.

IDS is comparing apples and oranges (in an attempt to mislead): A flexible contract is when you work a guaranteed amount of hours i.e. 40, but you can vary the times you work i.e. 8-4 one day, 9-5 the next, 10-6 the other. It is useful if you have varying commitments or want to schedule your journey to and from work to avoid traffic jams. I should know since I have worked on these contracts. As other commentators have pointed out zero hour (or ‘flexible contracts in IDS-speak) guarantee exactly that – zero hours; you are expected to be at the round-the-clock beck-and-call of an ’employer’. I have also worked these contracts and have seen colleagues sent back home from an (expected early morning) shift – humiliating doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Even if it was true, what does it say about job security when firms need to issue ZHs for a steady 25 hours work a week.
By far and large the hours are like that of part time labour and in certain cases even worse. People have to look at this like the average wage being 20’000 per annum, we all know most, especially unskilled DONT earn anywhere near that so when adjusted, your actually looking at around 16 hours.
This aside IDS dug his own grave as most people on ZH rely on inwork benefits to live as the contract wouldn’t exist or be excepted as they just don’t generate enough income. Also why if there quite acceptable and what people want aren’t they what DWP want, why have inwork conditionality?
IDSs claim of 25 hours average and flexibility is just a ploy to kid voters such contracts DONT place a burden on welfare expenditure and that they work and people are happy to except them, well any except all the unemployed it appears who have to be threatened to see the benefits of such a contract.

What happens if you are say overweight, and the jobcentre orders you to undergo some sort of stomach by-pass surgery? What happens if it goes wrong and you die on the operating table? Who is responsible?

All the bariatric surgeries are dangerous. The names for these procedures are bandied lightly about as if they were similar to having a wart frozen off. The reality is that every single one of these surgeries (even the basic gastric banding) creates a “patient for life” Many people who have undergone them, regret that decision and are left with several morbidities that far outweigh the issue or perceived risk of being very fat.
If anyone is forced to undergo any type of treatment, and it doesn’t work (bariatric surgery doesn’t always work and sometimes kills) then it will likely be the dead patient who is blamed. Twenty First Century medicine in the west is currently all about blaming the patient, ticking the box and claiming the funding.
With psychiatric interventions, those with MH issues are in a seriously dangerous position because most of the therapies on offer do nothing to heal, nothing to cure, nothing to rebuild broken lives. What is on offer (and this includes the private psychiatric/therapy world) is unproven, outmoded, harmful crap based on cheapness of delivery, volume and of course – brain damaging drugs.
It’s typical of the tories to pick on two health matters which are confounding even the most intelligent sections of medicine and psychiatry. Both matters have a very low “cure” rate when people are treated voluntarily. If people are to be coerced into these types of treatment, then no one is going to be “cured” but many will die or at best have their lives further damaged.

This is something that worries me. At the moment it’s geared towards people claiming sick benefits. But uc is now coming for workers. How long before everyone is told it’s compulsory to have this or that check up / test ect?? Women forcibly. Sent for smear testing and breast screening as was recently suggested in Poland? It seems I’m inundated with offers to attend this or that check up by my nhs gp. My theory is that it’s to patch us up and keep us working longer.. Am I just being silly here or..? And of course it’s everyone’s right to decide what’s best for them and their health. It’s appalling yet again the state is removing people choice

Think my previous comments got lost it was basically that I wonder how long it is before everyone, unemployed or not, is subject to compulsory health checks ect in an effort to make us work or do workfare for longper. It was proposed a few years ago to compel every working polish women to undergo regular smear and breast tests or they would not be allowed work at all

Too right, the ‘healthcare (or the ‘healthcare’ that the proles receive) is bullshit – it just to patch you up and put you back on the production to squeeze as the Ryanair boss said “the last juice out of the lemon”. And it is probably one of the reasons ‘free healthcare’ came into being – some bean-counter calculated it was cheaper to ‘patch up’ the existing stock rather then produce new ones. And once you become ‘uneconomically viable to ‘patch up’ like a used car you are thrown away like a dirty dish rag and consigned to the great scrapyard in the sky.

This is why claimants need in writing from DWP that they accept all liability before agreeing to any treatment, don’t allow them to pass it on to whos doing the treatment as it wasn’t them that made you come under threat of sanction.
Like I said before, its a very complicated subject that IDS or any tory member will have to work hard to get passed so do expect them to present even more lies to play on claimants ignorance inorder to get you to accept treatment.

Written statements from the DWP saying that they accept liability, won’t do you much good if you are dead. Even if you are “only” harmed by the compulsory treatments. You are going to struggle to get any reparation via the courts, since medical negligence is no longer funded by Legal Aid (apart from severe cases involving children) it’s unlikely any individual on benefits would get to test the veracity of a DWP statement of liability in court.

Theres plenty of no win, no fee solicitors covering medical negligence. Its not as entirely free (insurance) but will only be taken on if you have a just case.
As things currently stand, claimants don’t have to agree to any treatment so the time to strategize is when and dependant on what the tories do to make this so.
Dealing on past events/schemes I would imagine it wont be as mandatory as DWP will prescribe, that it will have an air of but no substance like the old placement schemes that were voluntary to enter into but mandatory there after, the voluntary bit was masked. Its the same with UJM registration whereby they can mandate you register but they cant mandate you to enter any personal and or sensitive data. They can mandate you to look for work on UJM BUT not to apply only through a UJM account and that’s not all regarding UJM. DWP cannot mandate you use there system as a way to circumnavigate cookie laws (rule 6) yet they led claimants to believe such.
I could go on and on how DWP mask schemes as mandatory that either wholly or inpart are most certainly not, hence the opinion that this will turn out no different I suspect but only time will tell.

The problem we all have regarding looking for and applying for jobs, we send our CV’s out to employers, we sometimes don’t receive a reply, meanwhile the employer has many peoples CV’s and holds on to them knowing that he or she can replace his or her paid employees with the unemployed, so the employer looks through those CV’s and finds some suitable, …………….
Meanwhile we have to look for and apply for paid employment.

1 million people using food banks.- those 10.2 million and counting part time workers, ZH, mentally Ill, self employed and who’s next, soon to have to go to a JC because of UC, when UC is in place all over the UK, this 1 million people will very soon rise to 2 million using food banks, we have to remember that at the moment many of those people who don’t yet have to go to a JC will not know what is happening, we know they will all be lied to when in a JC, and of course will be sanctioned left right and centre because they don’t know what we know. meanwhile I have been meeting some of those people, telling them what is happening and also giving them docs. (those docs that we have access to)

We’ll soon see what the reality is when all those new claimants have to turn up to the JC, it is going to be worse for those who work part time and who have kids, as you said, in this town UC starts this Sept, while not many of them have heard of UC or of sanctions, some think I’m talking about the sanctions on Russia!. I’m just trying to help as many as I can before they have to start going to the JC.
Talking about new claimants, on Friday in the JC, a few new claimants came in, adviser – ” while your waiting to sign on, there are computers over here, you can search for jobs, do you know your password for UJM? claimant, – I forgot it, adviser – it’s ok I’ve got it written down.
I thought I’d wait outside until those people came out of the JC, and told them what they should do and what they shouldn’t do!

Hi Enigma, I hope you had a good weekend ?. As previously mentioned I have a Genetic Disorder. I also mentioned it by name. Neurofibromatosis Type 1. Because of the nature of this disorder, it is mainly on my arms. I am very hard to get insurance for anything. This also includes the one called Employer Liability. If I were in the position of being in work and had an accident there would be NO cover. Insurance Companies won’t give insurance for it. The Jobcentre know this so do the DWP Medical Advisors. I am still given the run-around etc. Currently I am at the pre-assessment stage of ESA once again. I know what the answer will be even after any Mandatory Reconsideration and Appeal Process. How can I get them to back off. Thanks for any advice!

I did see your comment on the previuos post regarding you having Neurofibromatosis Type 1, I have seen people with that condition before but did look at a few pictures to remind myself of what it is, If I were you I would go to a tribunal, meanwhile record every convisation when ever your in a JC, if you ever go to a C.A.B. record the convisations there too because the DWP plant advisers in C.A.B.’s, and remember the NHS is involved in making people fit for work, here in W Sussex it’s called “proactive care” so if you ever go to a hospital record any convisations there, so also while seeing a Doctor, Maximus states on their letters they send out to people, “if your going to record the assesment, you should let us know before your assesment”, (of course they would say that) this doesn’t mean you have to tell them, I wouln’t.
From what you said, you know what to say at a tribunal, meanwhile the DWP is trying to make you fit for work, even though they know they shouldn’t, but we we know the plan is for everyone on ESA to be put on JSA so that we can all work for our benefits – workfare, the truth is though we don’t have to work for our benefits or even be involved in any of DWP schemes.
Don’t forget, just because of an assesment, it doesn’t mean you will then be made “fit for work” for life. many people have appealed, and won.

There are Doctors who are against what is happening to the disabled, when I was on ESA, one Doc said to me “there is other jobs you can do” but still gave me a note for a month, a different Doc the following month, “are you in pain” – a note for 3 months.

Nicola Sturgeon has unveiled an SNP manifesto promising to back a series of Ed Miliband’s plan to increase taxes on the wealthy as she promised to ensure Labour delivered “real change” rather than merely being a “carbon copy” of the Tories.
It claims there will be an additional £140 billion of public spending available across the UK to spend on skills, infrastructure, the NHS and other public services and to lift people out of poverty.
They will “vigorously oppose” plans for further cuts in Child Benefit and Tax Credits and will vote to increase benefits in line with the Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation “to ensure that the incomes of the poorest in society do not fall even further behind the cost of living.”
The Nationalists also want a 20 per cent rise in the Work Allowance, the amount people are allowed to earn before their benefits are cut. They want an urgent review of the system of assessments for disability benefits and an overhaul of Work Capability Assessments.

New electric signing-on machine still not working today – despite having been told (again) to bring ID etc for it.

Andrew, if you can cast your mind back to the wonderful 90s and Windows 95/Windows 98 etc. What was the main problem with them?
Buffer overflow from virus – ie the sfotware engineers did minimal testing.
Guess what the main problem with this rubbish is?
You guessed it – Buffer Overflow is up there at number one.
It won’t work because it can’t work.
Software is kaput, and the same goes for the device. It’s incapable of processing the data which is causing it to fall over. Basic Basic problem.
And DWP didn’t test to spot it before buying however many thousands and are now stuck in a contract paying 200/300 each month for each one.

Teaching people to practise mindfulness works just as well as antidepressants in preventing relapses of depression, according to the first major comparison of the two approaches.

Just thought I’d mention that the Green Party has pledged to end workfare completely. It’s right there on page 55 of the full manifesto. No ifs, no buts, no tinkering around the edges. The Greens say that workfare needs to end!
