Ipswich Unemployed Action.

Campaigning for Unemployed Rights.

Conservatives: Failed Work Programme Model for the ‘Big Society’.

Mr Cestoda:  Official Tory Spokesperson on Welfare Reform.

The Tory Manifesto is out.

These are the main points that concern Ipswich Unemployed Action.

 Welfare:
  • Welfare Reform: A Conservative government would continue to pursue Iain Duncan Smith’s reform agenda and ensure that work paid better than welfare.
  • Cap Spending: Overall welfare spending would be capped, and the household benefit cap reduced to £23,000.
  • Immigration: Reform of welfare rules will be utilised to apply indirect controls to immigration from within the European Union.

A welfare system that is fair  to those who need it, and fair to those who pay for it too: stopping benefit cheats and ending welfare abuse

We will cap the UK’s overall welfare spending, to save you money We will keep a check on the growth of welfare spending, enabling us to provide a system that is fair to those who need it, and fair to those who pay for it too.

Our overall welfare cap will limit the amount that government can spend on certain social security benefits in the five years from 2015-16. We will freeze working age benefits for two years from April 2016, with exemptions for disability and pensioner benefits – as at present – as well as maternity allowance, statutory maternity pay, statutory paternity pay, statutory adoption pay and statutory sick pay

We will deliver Universal Credit, in order to provide the right incentives for people to work; target support at those who need it most; reduce fraud and error; and streamline administration of the welfare system.

Many a rash promise made in haste, and never delivered….

This is of interest,

Helping you build the Big Society.
We will innovate in how we deliver public services We have pioneered ways to deliver high-quality public services, including through getting the voluntary sector more involved.”

Comment: What do they mean by the ‘voluntary sector? What kind of ‘model’ does it offer?

A clue:

For example, our Work Programme has helped harness the talent and energy of charities to help people turn their lives around and find their way back into work. We will examine ways to build on this type of innovative approach in the future

They’re ‘aving a bleein’ larf!

Obviously they mean a system riddled with incompetent bunglers, fellow-tape worm parasites (aka: ‘providers’ the unemployment ‘bizniz’), chancers, unable to deliver the goods….

Apparently this is all said straight-faced.

What is this then?

We have also pioneered the use of social impact bonds and payment-by-results, and we will look to scale these up in the future, focusing on youth unemployment, mental health and homelessness

Sounds like another tape-wormy plan to feed off the public.

Still: you too can help the Tories run society and grind down the poor:

We will help you volunteer and support action to help the vulnerable We will support the Prince of Wales’ Step Up To Serve initiative, encouraging young people to serve in their community”

And we will make volunteering for three days a year a workplace entitlement for people working in large companies and the public sector. People could, for example, volunteer for a local charity or serve as a school teacher, refuse collector, fire fighter, park keeper, surgeon, nurse or carer.

(actually I made the later examples up….)

The Tories live in fucking Narnia wonderland.

  1. The volunteering lark brings to mind this story,

Eric Pickles car crash interview: Senior Tory struggles to explain Cameron’s paid volunteering scheme.

“Communities secretary Eric Pickles suffered a bruising encounter on Radio 4’s Today programme as he struggled to explain Tory plans to give workers three days’ paid leave for volunteering.

David Cameron pledged a future Conservative government will offer workers in the public sector and big private companies three days’ paid leave for volunteering. Large companies are classified as those with 250 or more employees. Almost 15m workers will be eligible for the extra leave.

Pickles likened the policy to workers taking their annual leave. Pressed on who would pay for the cost of nurses in NHS hospitals taking an extra three days away from work, Pickles was unable to name a figure. He said: “It would be worked out so as not cause inconvenience to hospitals.”

Asked why his party felt the need to force more volunteering on large private companies, Pickles argued it was about “putting something back into society”. However, the lack of detail and wooly phrasing came off to many listeners as political waffle.

The senior Tory became increasingly frustrated with the line of questioning and repeated the same comeback he used earlier in the interview with Justin Webb, “I’m sorry my answers are getting in the way of your questions.”

He claimed companies would benefit from having an “engaged workforce”. There was further confusion around whether or not the companies would be forced to allow the three days volunteering. Pickles said, “no one is forcing companies to organise this volunteering if it causes problems to the company”.

When asked if there would be provision in the legislation about a situation where a company felt it was too burdensome to allow an extra three days off work volunteering and decided not to engage in the programme, Pickles said:

We expect a bit of give and take on this, in the same way that we expect people to have a bit of give and take with regard to annual leave.

Things only got worse for Pickles when he pitched up on the Daily Politics to be grilled by Andrew Neil. Quizzed over how the Tories’ new pledge to freeze regulated rail fares would cost Pickles drew a blank and appeared disoriented as there were troubles with the line.”

  3. A few very old pensioners will vote out of habit and so we will get the most severe hung parliament because most people will not vote.

With no party winning outright to be able to form a government, we will get a Tory caretaker government for the next 5 years.

Even if the Tories then call a second general election, we will just get a Tory / Labour coalition, and no opposition in the UK parliament.

So voting for small parties that do not have an MP in government yet can have the best chance in generations.

The non-voter had a landslide victory in 2010, with the same voter turnout as 1918 after so many men had died in the first world war.

WHO ARE THE PARTIES OF THE POOR OF THE LEFT WHO WILL END
STARVATION AND SANCTIONS AND SAVE THE NHS AND WELFARE STATE

  4. My partner does voluntary work in an old folks home. We’re both on Jsa. She has just received a 4-page form called ‘Volunteering when claiming benefits….”.
Two of the questions are..” Do you get anything other than expenses?”…and “.. Why are you not paid for your time?..” Think about that last one.
Veiled threats in the form indicate benefit may be affected. I thought the bastards would approve of voluntary work.

Now half the public services seem to be propped up by volunteers (Suffolk Libraries onwards).

The Tories will (1) use workfare to fill paid jobs in the public services, and now.,

        (2) Try to get everybody else doing this.

Barrister and Cambridge hopeful Chamali Fernando has since accused her opponents of “distorting commentary” — but has not denied making the suggestion, which would clearly stigmatise those which such conditions.

Having tweeted about the incident, local political blogger Richard Taylor told the Cambridge Tab:

“She said as a barrister she would like to be able to help mentally ill people … She then said suggested a different coloured wristband for each mental health condition for those who are unable to communicate their conditions.”

  9. According to ONS figures,

    http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-353568

The tory government created 1.8 million jobs while in power.

BUT, when observing the figures you will find only 20% of them were PAYE, while the remaining 80% went to self employment. Now for the record no government can claim credit to create self employment, that’s the reserve of the individual doing it.

Another thing to note is the productivity puzzle, how despite increasing employment, it is continuing to still drop to new lows.

This, along with the latest revelation of a flaky 5 billion the tories claim we will make from tax evasion pours more cold water over there claimed success during there governance.

If theres one thing I have learnt about today politicians is that, its not what they say but more so what they don’t that really counts, a consideration I hope the electorate take into account before hitting the polls soon.

  10. Another thing to consider is theres around a 110 billion shortfall in revenue collected Vs public expenditure, meaning no matter the party all will borrow and thus increase the national debt. Now when we borrow to prop the public expenditure, we have to borrow even more and invest it in the hope of covering both. Year on year we have failed to plug that gap and as a result, it just gets bigger no matter QE and or austerity cuts. To make matters worse, most expects in the field agree both have had a negative impact.

In the case of welfare reform despite reducing expenditure, the cost jumped elsewhere as the headcount swelled at the NHS, prisons and charities yet todate the government is unable to account exactly why, nor seems interested in trying to along with escalating suicides.

Theres a scientific principle that states you cant get more out of what you put in yet what the tories and even labour prescribe defies the very fundamental rule so whats next, there tell us they have discovered zero point energy, time travel or that aliens from a distant planet will come and save us ?

Jobcentre ‘Work Coaches’ cannot make following mandatory.

Today the DWP disclosed a summary of it’s Work Coaches (WC) “main activities“, it is worth noting that use of the ‘My Work Plan‘ is entirely voluntary and benefit claimants can restrict WC/DWP access to Universal Jobmatch accounts. Under Universal Credit (UC), it is not a requirement to sign a Claimant Commitment (CC), legislation requires that one be “accepted” via a number of means. Before accepting a UC CC, there is a 7 day cooling off period.

  16. “The coalition has orchestrated a demonisation of need, where someone struggling on Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) has been recast as the feckless workshy and a person too sick to work is a scrounger worthy of suspicion.

Right-wing media and ‘poverty porn’ television have simply fed a fear that our own government has started. Benefit fraud is less than one per cent. The biggest part of social security spending – 53 per cent – actually goes to pensioners. Listen to Ian Duncan Smith and you would think the disabled were living in gold houses and the unemployed bathing in diamonds.

The sanction regime is characteristic of the distortion of a compassionate, fair safety-net. Jobcentre staff report being given targets for stopping people’s benefits, whether that’s a claimant who’s five minutes late for an appointment or someone with chronic illness who’s too sick to get out of bed. Meanwhile, workfare schemes force people on JSA to work for free or be sanctioned. This is not only about removing benefits but the principle behind them. Social security as a universal entitlement is being attacked.

A major tool in this has been the stigmatisation of people needing benefits – part of a wider attempt to make the public see things in terms of workers versus claimants. But the facts show this is an entirely false division. A job market characterised by unstable hours and low wages has pushed working people towards benefits. Housing benefit figures alone show the number of people in work needing help to pay the rent has increased by almost 60 per cent under the coalition.

Britain is getting poorer. This government’s choices – both benefit cuts and tax changes – have made more workers, more children, more disabled people struggle. 13 million people now live in poverty in this country.

It is charity that has been left to pick up the pieces. Half a million people have had to go to food banks to feed themselves over the past six months – most because of benefit delays and sanctions, others due to low wages. This is part of a disturbing retreat of the state, where private companies and local volunteers fill the gaps left by failing government.

Taking back the welfare state is a fundamental issue of this election. The stakes could not be higher: the right to a life without poverty and a system where we help each other. As Class set out in their election guide, we must restore social security as a permanent, humane part of British society.
