Food Banks Now Officially Part of Welfare System.

with 20 comments

Jobcentres have been advised to send people to food banks, raising fears of the creeping use of the emergency food as a integral part of the welfare state, it has been reported.

The Department for Work and Pensions is advising jobcentres using a six-step flowchart on how to send people to food banks, according to guidances obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and reported by the Guardian.

Ministers have previously insisted that food banks are not part of a formal system used by Jobcentres. Lord Freud insisted in July last year that “food banks are absolutely not part of our welfare system”.

“Jobcentre Plus offices do not issue food vouchers,” he said. “Some Jobcentre Plus offices have an agreement with their local food bank for referrals, but some simply signpost claimants to a variety of available local provision, including by local authorities, depending on their immediate needs. We gave Jobcentre Plus district managers the freedom to make local links with food banks.”

This is a complete disgrace, to say the least!

  1. When the organisers of a charity food bank in Coventry received their 10,000th client, they held a ceremony during which the city’s mayor handed a free bag of shopping to a man considered to be the most deserving recipient.

Amid a ripple of applause from the crowd of officials, a grinning Darren Harvey stepped forward to receive the emergency supply of food, which was enough to feed him and his family for about three days.

The fly-on-the-wall crew gave viewers a revealing insight into 44-year-old Mr Harvey, however. For far from being deserving, he was exposed as a ‘conman’ — the local newspaper’s description — who was slyly taking jobs while claiming benefits, accusations he denies.

In addition it was claimed he had a string of petty criminal offences, had been accused of tricking two women out of thousands of pounds, and was alleged to have been evicited by his landlord after refusing to pay rent. Little wonder the BBC documentary described him as a man with a ‘sense of entitlement’.

Of course, Harvey is not typical of everyone who uses food banks — which provide a valuable service for many genuinely needy people. But there is widespread concern not only that they are being abused, but also that they are being used by the Left and anti-poverty campaigners as a political tool to attack the ‘uncaring’ government’s drive to reform the welfare system.

It appears despite changing the rate at which JSA/ESA payments rises, despite increasing sanctions and misusing jobseeker directions that the government has to resort to NEW METHODS to CUT the welfare bill so as to look creditable before the next election.

Yet todate we don’t see the same zest put forward by the tax office whos fraud dwarfs benefit cheats hands down.

Oh before I forget, NO they don’t need your PRIOR CONSENT to use your PERSONAL DATA to check, its LEGALLY covered under EXEMPTIONS within the data protection act.

    • Effectively HMRC/DWP have free rein to rifle through ALL benefits claimants credit reference agency files. Absolutely outrageous and a gross invasion of privacy!

    • Master Towelfolder announced use of credit agencies in his Autumn Review in October 2010. It was supposed to be applied to anyone who claimed a means tested benefit when initially assessing their claim. I think they must have had some problems there, because this latest announcement seems to be a cut down version of what was planned.

  5. “Poor taking items back to food banks as they can’t afford to cook, Oxfam claims”

People are forced onto prepayment meters because of huge fuel bills and arrears building cannot heat the food.its a disgust that this should happen this day and age. tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for those on benefits.wasting money on tendering contracts for private companies who just grab.

  6. I’ve just looked on What do they know, and a Miss Fernandes has just been given a 6 week mandatory activity by the Jobcentre. I thought, currently, they were only supposed to be 4 weeks, and no more.

And while I’m at it, does anyone know if this 6 month Workfare is coming or not? My JCP adviser told me that initially it may only be people who have just come off the WP from April onwards who will be put on to it.

Anyone heard anything from their JCP/WP advisers?

Here’s something that will either make you laugh or cry. I couldn’t believe it when I read it. In Littleport, not only is the Foodbank being run by Workfare exploiters, the Salvation Army, it would appear they’re also trying to kill off local jobseekers by feeding them all the fattening food donated to them by Littleport Slimming World.

Sharon Heaps, who has run the Slimming World group for 17 years, said: “The pleasure it gave me to contact the foodbank and tell them that they have an enormous amount of goodies coming their way was fantastic.

“What better way to help our members get back on track than by helping our local community at the same time.”

What better way to kill them more like. You ignorant slut – I hope you choke on your next meal.

    • Not a real plane…. real plane toilets have barely elbow room, and stink to high heaven. Not as badly as train toilets though.
