Crisis as Atos withdraws following death threats

with 44 comments

Its not looking too good for the Government as Atos has called an early end to their assessment contracts

The conscience of Atos Doctors have finally caught up with them following threats of violence and intimidation in their work along with death threats made to staff face-2-face and online. Atos has had to withdraw from its Government contract for the Work Capability Assessments as its staff are deserting a sinking ship – protesters have done extremely well to put pressure on Atos and expose their actions, and of course get some form of justice for the thousands of victims. But justice is still to come.

The tables have turned. The Government is angry at Atos’ for abandoning the bullying and killing of thousands of disabled and sick people. Atos wanted to walk away from the contract for months with great resistance from the Government but decided to break confidentiality by publishing a statement online about withdrawing from the contract. They have broken proper protocol by doing this under desperation…

The issue for the Conservatives (officially, the coalition) is how do you replace Atos with other companies? On paper its relatively simple to do. Atos are kind enough to keep doing the contract until replacements were found. You might be interested in knowing how they want a couple of providers to eventually replace Atos, and not just replacing them with one big company hungry for public cash. The answer is simple, they need parallel action to continue Atos’ work, after all staff are leaving left, right and centre… it makes sense to quickly get an alternative replacement rather than requiring 6-12 months or so to replace the entire Atos offering.

Its true that you are only as strong as your weakest link. This scandal is going to rage now, as the vicious untouchable circle has been broken. Enough medical professionals soon out of Atos employment are likely to be willing to disclose the insider trade secrets and practices via anonymous whistle-blowing – especially if unable to get another similar job.

There will also be greater scrutiny to review the WCA, Atos’ conduct and the contract in general. This is what the Government is angry at. You cannot make a fair assessment on an ongoing contract but once this has been assigned to other providers, both Atos and the Government have a lot of questions to answer to.

Abuse and Violence

Atos claims just under 2000 assaults or severe abuse on staff last year. These so-called medical professionals didn’t mind getting paid for falsifying assessments fully in the knowledge that by doing so could result in death; but as soon as they started to get mildy abused – probably sworn at, they threatened to jump ship, leaving Atos behind.

The Government knows (as Atos does too well) that threats and fear of violence, intimidation and death (allegedly) is only going to increase.

Next Steps

Keep up the pressure on Atos. And the Government!

We need to:-

  1. Pressure the Government into withdrawing the WCA
  2. Pressure any bidders not to want to bid for the replacement contracts
  3. Persuade people via awareness to discourage individuals wanting to apply for the assessment jobs
  4. Keep pressure on Atos. They are still running the contract for now
  5. Get justice for the victims including a full in depth inquiry, including where possible criminal charges

Thanks to everyone protesting against Atos and the poor treatment of the disabled and sick. The media is still paying lip service to this whole scandal. There is a General Election next year, the media are looking for scandals to embarrass the Conservatives and welfare/unemployment/immigration is an increasingly hot topic… keep the pressure on.

  1. Atos in talks over early exit from fitness-for-work tests contract
Under-fire company says it will continue to provide service until new contractors have been appointed

The company that carries out “fitness for work” tests on disabled benefit claimants is seeking an early exit from its contract with the government in the face of persistent death threats to staff.

Atos Healthcare said it had been in discussions with officials for several months about ending its £500m work capability assessment contract, which is due to run to August 2015.

  2. So Atos staff are being assaulted and receiving death threats. My heart bleeds for them. It’s nothing compared to the misery they’ve inflicted on the sick and vulnerable. When these so-called professional finally fall off the twig, I hope they go straight to hell and are forced to spend an eternity administering fellatio to an endless stream of livestock.

  3. Well JJ that’s one solution.

I doubt if anybody running ATOS will get any punishment until that happens.

  4. This is a little premature I think, they have yet to withdraw. Since their contract ends next year they probably won’t and this is all just spin. Consider that they are using the death threats which I think is being blown out of proportion. There’s no excuse for being a dickhead like that, but this just goes to portray all claimants as threatening scroungers.

At worst the DWP will just throw more public money at them to keep them sweet until the election. It’s fucking bullshit IMO.

That’s how I see it anyway.

      I agree 100%.

As if Atos care about anything!, well, one thing…Their PROFIT…

  5. I doubt they will pull out of the contract. The government are using ATOS to cover for far worse things they are doing to us themselves. ATOS are the perfect distraction. I’d be happier to see both the WCA and the PIP assessments ditched for good.

It’s extremely unlikely that ATOS give a flying fuck about the “death threats” to their staff as history tells me that a one time boss of ATOS, managed to achieve the highest rates of suicide amongst the workers of a large French telecoms company, during his period of office.

Note how they are making a big fuss about “death threats” and not the actual deaths of those whom these unemployable dregs of health care, actually assessed. It would have been more appropriate for ATOS to be withdrawing due to shame wouldn’t it?

There would be huge penalty clauses on both sides to get out of such a massive contract. I don’t think either party would be keen on paying up.

Unless the WCA and PIP are ditched, things will just get much worse.

  6. Well, I’ll tell everyone on here something:

Mr Dennis Skinner MP’s (Labour) speech outside ATOS London offices may and have probably conrtibuted to this.

Works for me, 100% Mr Skinner MP – Keep it up mate – we are all behind you.

  7. If you work at Atos and get depressed or stressed enough, Atos will sack you and use its in-house occupational therapist to assess you as unfit for work. A few days later your former colleagues at Atos will assess you as being fit for work and not entitled to any benefits!

What about the tens or hundreds of thousands of assaults on the people Atos sees, and whose benefits Atos stops? What about the murders, and the Atos-caused suicides? The kids taken into care because the things their disabled parents need to look after them, Atos causes to get taken away? The relationships Atos wrecks? The disabled sportspeople being blamed both for being disabled and for having the gall to play sport, and being told by Atos they are not disabled enough for benefits. When the fact they compete in disability sports should be proof they are disabled, as ablebodied people can’t compete in disabled categories. When, if they were any LESS disabled, they would not be allowed to compete in a disability category; and if they were any MORE disabled, they would be too disabled to do sport! Others are blamed for also competing in ablebodied events, which they are allowed to do, as there are very few disabled-only (or disabled-inclusive, or disability-prize subcategory, or pan/multi disability) events to enter! For even more disabled people, who don’t compete, but do sport recreationally, the fact they are sometimes active in a sport should not count against them! They are doing an activity they like, and it’s a way to get out of the house, socialise with friends, meet people, improve health, participate in the community/society, and possibly get good enough to compete. And a zillion other reasons for doing sport.

If Atos rules were followed rigidly, then a disabled person (if we are to be allowed to have leisure at all) can’t go to the pub with their friends, or if allowed to go there, must never play
snooker/pool/billiards, darts, skittles, quoits, wheelchair or other pingpong, table football, arcade games, beermat flipping…. If all your ablebodied friends play, you are not allowed to! Just sit there like a good little crip…. Don’t even use a juke box because that is activity.

Fuck Atos, and fuck whatever interchangeable morons are sent to replace them.

    something survived...

    • We have to ask if the government plans to make people pay for appeals against sanctions will also apply to those making appeals against the Work Capability Assessments.

That way there’ll be a lot fewer appeals and the statistics will look better.

      Problem solved!

      Andrew Coates

      February 23, 2014 at 12:24 pm

      • If this happens, then fees will be payable by all who have a current benefit claim and go to the First Tier Tribunal. This will cover ALL benefits which can be withdrawn due to sanction or failing a WCA or getting an incorrect result. It will apply to those who currently get DLA and then PIP.

It will apply to anyone on benefits who takes their case to Tribunal.

  8. What does Atos expect the way they have treated disabled people. If i had to have a medical with them i would do the same. This business is corrupt just like all the other Government departments especially Jobcentre plus. Labour in Tory out. You will be out next year Cameron you waste of space.

  9. People want a Democracy not a dictatorship like the present Government. People want choice and don’t want to be bullied and intimidated by this Government. People want jobs and they don’t want to have to go to the food bank. People want proper wages so they too don’t have to go to the food bank. People want their job and not to loose it through Government Cuts. People want a proper government that cares about the citizens of this country. Not a Tory government that does not care.

    February 23, 2014 at 9:40 am

  10. This Government is corrupt from head to toe. In fact this Government is the worst one ever.
This Government does not live in the real world;infact they don’t have a clue how ordinary people live. People have worked all their life therefore i should not starve if they are so unfortunate to become unemployed. People don’t want the Tory Government they want an alternative maybe Labour if they get their act together and i hope they do. Out with you Cameron and in with Ed. Out with Dictatorship and in with Democracy.

Another high street chain has now been exposed as using workfare: Peacocks have taken on workfare placements instead of hiring staff.

  18. Jobcentre awarded staff gold stars for sanctioning claimants.

DWP’s denials that it uses targets to force Jobcentre staff to sanction benefits claimants is struck yet another blow this evening — with Scrapbook having seen photographic evidence of a ‘scoreboard’ where the staff record the number of sanctions they have made using shiny gold stars.

Other Jobcentres have ‘league tables’ on the wall.

Staff who don’t meet targets placed on review.

Jobcentre whistleblower warns of helplines chaos for job seekers.

Welsh MP Peter Hain was contacted by a civil servant who has outlined a range of problems in Jobcentres.

A whistleblowing Jobcentre manager has told former Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain that the removal of helpline phones for the use of claimants will cause serious difficulties for the most vulnerable people in Britain.

It emerged that the move was part of a nationwide strategy approved by current Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

“This proves what I have felt for a long time – that it’s all about cuts and absolutely nothing to do with creating a better or fairer system. The consequence will be increased misery, with people finding it more difficult to get their benefits restored when they have been cut off as a result of some error.

These changes are dictated by adherence to a tick-box culture, and take no account of the human element.”

  20. E-petitions can be very effective, but don’t put them in the hands of government.

The aim of a petition is to get something done, yet Directgov is rarely more than a farce. It’s better to use independent sites.

There is a small green bag in the House of Commons that hangs hidden on the back of the Speaker’s chair with a sign attached. It reads: “Do not touch”. Into this bag disappear all the petitions that pass through parliament.

I like to post a warning about a website that has serious security threat reports issued against it sometime in the past. My Chrome browser extension ‘Bitdefender Trafficlight’ is flagging up a warning if I try to access x-jobs.com, the website I have mentioned in earlier posts today. My Chrome App is flagging up this warning…

    ”Untrusted domain
This page may be safe, but some security threats have been reported in the past.”

Can I advise all people on here that if you come across this un-trusted website x-jobs.com to avoid it at all costs and get this post of mine viral onto other welfare blogs.

Any access to that untrusted domain will put your home computer at extreme risk from any potential internet threat out there, ranging from security breaches to your PC’s hardware, malware infections or even internet thieves trying to steal people’s identity.

Thank you, if you can heed this advice and spread this across other blog websites.

    • For AWP

Yes, I’m a bit suspicious of X Jobs as well. A batch of their adverts have started to appear on Universal Jobmatch – and they are extremely similar to adverts which used to appear under a company called “Search Job Vacancies”.

What gives the game away is the “sameness” of their adverts, including the same locations where the jobs are supposed to be.

By the way, the company called “Search Job Vacancies” seems to have disappeared recently from Universal Jobmatch!

      February 25, 2014 at 5:11 pm

      • If the site is the one I have produced a link for below then it to as did search job vacancies did, uses GODADDY.COM servers also. This means like the latter anyone parting with their personal and or sensitive data IS NOT PROTECTED UNDER BRITISH LAW as the servers reside outside of the UKs domain.

It appears that this site merely advertises other recruitment agencies adverts while trying to entice the audience to upload CVs. They have selected to evade the question of their actual address by supplying only an email through us only contact response.

So spot on I reckon Tobanem.

HSBC has released the total amount paid out in salaries, bonuses and other award to its eight highest-paid senior executives in 2013. Let us show you how many lifetimes’ worth of your pay these eight people each received last year.

    Employee 1
    £7.06m per year.

    Employee 2

    Employee 3
    £3.87m per year.

    Employee 6
    £2.85m per year.

    Employee 7
    £2.84m per year.

    Employee 8
    £2.81m per year.

How many years of your pay do these numbers represent?

    • On a basic wage rate of £6.31p an hour x 40 hours = £252.40p x 52 weeks = £13,124.80p before tax and nat ins:

Years it would take you to earn the same amount as:

Employee 1 would be 537 years
Employee 2 would be 317 years
Employee 3 would be 294 years
Employee 4 would be 246 years
Employee 5 would be 230 years
Employee 6 would be 217 years
Employee 7 would be 216 years

  31. If your GP diagnoses that you are unfit for work and ATOS or similar says otherwise why does your GP not complain? Their professional judgment has been questioned but they remain silent on this issue. I am no fan of Kenneth Clarke or the Tories but he said when he was Health Secretary (many years ago) that whenever he tried to make changes the BMA (doctors union)’s first reaction was to “reach for their wallets”.

    Seemingly nothing has changed.
