Free Bus Travel for Unemployed – Where’s the Catch?

with 11 comments

Unemployed to be offered Free Bus Travel?

The EADT says,

Bus companies taking part in the scheme include Chambers Coaches, Anglian Buses, First, TGM and Arriva The Shires & Essex.

Claire Haigh, chief executive of Greener Journeys, said: “In difficult economic times, this new scheme from Greener Journeys will provide a helpful start to the new year, enabling job hunters to travel around more easily in search of employment, to job interviews with prospective employers, and to training courses which will help them find work.

“This scheme will give people looking for employment access to free bus travel for one month. This will help many of them secure their first job, or a place on a relevant training course.”

Where’s the catch ?

One here:

The Bus for Jobs scheme will provide free travel on the bus services for the month of January and job- seekers who have been unemployed for between three months and one year will be eligible.

Next one here.

The scheme will cover holders of a JobCentre Plus Travel Discount Card. Those who are eligible for the card, which is available through JobCentre Plus, include people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support and actively engaged with a Jobcentre Plus adviser in returning to employment.

The JobCentre Plus Travel Discount Card is one of those magical things you hear about but do not know anybody who actually has one.

In any case that it is only available to those on JSA and not also on the Work Programme.

If you  want to enter this  merry world, for a month’s bus travel, and find that this scheme is unlikely to help you, first see this: Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card Eligibility by Andy Woolford Here.

Still, nice free publicity for the bus companies.

  2. “Bus for Jobs” what a poor name to call it!

I almost got an unemployed travel card once. I recall the need to enter the enquiry office every month and pay something like £2 for a “special ticket”… which means I can go on any bus for child fare when showing the ticket. What a joke! P.S. It wasn’t these new tickets… those old tickets which fade within 3 days of ownership OR a day if not protecting them

London already have a scheme set up (for decades) and I believe that other cities did or do have a similar scheme for free or subsidised travel for unemployed people and young persons under 16.

I cannot see it taking off in a triple-dip recession… everyone looks for work online, many will enquire about it (for good value i.e. get as much from Jobcentre Plus as they can) and many will use to get to the pub, to see friends etc. nothing for job searching.

Then there is the fact, do people even want to disclose that they are unemployed to everyone on the bus and get rid of the dignity of paying for your seat?

  4. Just asked about this at my signing on at JCP. No-one knew anything about it.
Also – No attempt made to explain UJ or get me to register – when I asked about this I was told that for people on the WP they were relying on the pimps to sell UJ.
I was also told that the reason for stopping the “coupon” signing on system and reinstating fixed appointments was the introduction of electronic signing (on a desk mounted tablet) – will be working at next sign on.

    • Same here, went to sign on this morning, no mention of UJM at all and I asked for 2 more Job log booklets which they gave me, no problems at all.
