BBC’s Anti-Welfare State Programmes Attacked.

with 7 comments

“We are outraged that the BBC is joining the propaganda war aimed at destroying the welfare state, Britain’s most civilised and civilising legacy (Last night’s TV, G2, 28 October). In the 1940s, after years of depression and slaughter, working-class people who had sacrificed so much felt entitled to a life without the constant threat of war and poverty. Family allowance, income support, unemployment and housing benefits, disability benefits, a state pension, the NHS and free education have assumed that everyone contributed and deserved to be looked after “from the cradle to the grave”.”

The BBC has also sent its well-paid staff to produce this:

Panorama Special(Documentary) Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 on BBC 1 from 8:00pm to 9:00pm

Britain on the Fiddle.

It’s estimated that twenty-two billion pounds of taxpayers’ money is effectively stolen or lost every year through fraud and error – a sizeable chunk of that is benefit fraud – money that could end up being taken out of the pockets of those in genuine need. In this Panorama Special, Richard Bilton uses undercover cameras to expose people on benefits sailing yachts and driving Bentleys. And he follows fraud investigators as they tackle the rising tide of benefits cheats using fake identities to steal millions.

  1. 22 billion? Last time it was calculated it was 5 odd bn for fraud and error combined with the latter being two thirds that total.

    • That is clever BBC Propaganda spin!!

Yes, the figure was around £5bn for fraud and ERROR (including that of DWP error)

I don’t doubt that £22bn is stolen each year, I would state this figure is a bit low… tax evasion, MP expenses, benefit fraud, welfare to work providers, Government corruption…

however the majority of this isn’t due to benefit fraud! Now people are assuming the £5bn BENEFIT FRAUD (and official error) amount has increased to £22bn… so here we go, 3 year benefit sanctions and workfare, here we come!!

      A couple of links:-
2009/10 benefit fraud £143.7m – short of the £1.5bn allegation mark

87% of benefit fraud allegations are false and malicious

A small number of criminals exist… but doesn’t mean its right to attack innocent people and deny them their rights.

      • That’s a hell of a stretch to conflate tax fraud/evasion with benefit fraud. They are completely different things! Have the Daily Mail brigade brainwashed the people that much already?

      • Absolutely Workey, and the stuff about people on the Dole “sailing yachts and driving Bentleys” is bottom-of-the-barrel Daily Express – and it’s taken directly from the BBC’s own site.

The BBC should hang its head in shame for putting out this.

  2. Britains’ biggest criminals are the bankers: the Financial Terrorists.

Never was so much damage caused by so few in so short a time!

  3. The answer to BBC anti-welfare propaganda is simple – cut off their funding. There is absolutely no need to buy a TV licence. If you must watch TV as it’s being broadcast then nowadays you can do it quite legally without a TV licence using catch up services (thereby saving yourself £145.50).
I wouldn’t recommend breaking the law, but if you do watch TV broadcasts without a licence, once you learn your rights and how powerless BBC TV licensing really are, you realise that there’s absolutely nothing they can do (as long as you don’t communicate with them in any way).

    • Buying a TV Licence is paying for your own propaganda. But for the the weakest and most vulnerable members of our community it is akin to building your own gallows 🙂
