Criticising ATOS – and Others, A4E onwards?

with 9 comments

From Louise’s Blog:

I posted about this a week ago. It seems Carer Watch’s forum has been reinstated. Atos contacted the internet providers who closed the forum down. It seems it’s because of a post someone wrote way back in March!! Er, why wait this long to say anything……????

One point that seems overlooked in debates about outsourcing public sector work to private companies is the use of commercial confidentiality and the defamation laws to protect these firms from public criticism and accountability? Criticise the DWP for always being incompetent at something? While in a democracy the citizen can say what he or she wants to about the government. Say the same thing about the outsourcing company that takes over the same function? Be careful you are not damaging their reputation which they view as you attacking their corporate private property. Want to know ho much they spend on consultants? Perhaps how any of these consultants were former politicians or senior civil servants? How much time to they spend monitoring what is said about them on the internet? Commercially confidential information each time.

I can’t help wondering if this has wider implications.

After all, we criticise Saint Emma Harrison, CBE, and other companies making a tidy sum out of the unemployed.

Will they try to shut us down?

    • I sometimes wonder what would have happened if the ‘Storm Dencora House’ post had been on the Blog in last few weeks.

I’d probably be facing a long period in prison.

  2. Apropos of politicians acting as consultants for these rancid, private sector, poverty pimps – David Blunket was on the Today programme this morning on R4, lauding the idea that any young person not in education or training should be pressured into becoming a “volunteer” for nine months(for charities, community projects – presumably work that was previously done by paid employees) by the threat of losing their benefits. Not only is our freedom of speech under threat, the very meaning of the language we use is changing to suit the oppressors – volunteers should be just that. You cannot be a volunteer if you are coerced.

Yesterday the “i” newspaper reported that when Severe Disablement Allowance is abolished, this will have an adverse effect on the UK’s Young Carers. So not only will each person this is paid to be £70 pw worse off, the young carer looking after them will probably lose any post16 benefits too as they will be unavailable to “volunteer” because they have to care for a relative – if Blunkett’s ludicrous suggestion is taken up.

The last couple of weeks it has been like watching a pissing contest between politicians who are desperate to out do each other with insane proposals to smash the poor and sick.

Whatever happened to the Silly Season?

  4. I’m affraid your facts are slightly wrong, Atos may have contacted CarerWatch’s Hosts but it was Black Triangle Campaign who got them back online on a secure Icelandic server, Atos had nothing to do with getting them back on line.

I didn’t see them contacting me to get my website back on line? There a bunch of bullies, plain and simple…

  5. Next week sees the second reading of the welfare reform bill in the house of lords, contacting as many members of the house of lords before then is imperative.

If you want to email some of the members here is a link to some of those people, let them know how the welfare bill will effect you or your family, tell them about the disaster which is Atos.
Thanks for the plug bye the way… Great site…

  6. “I got shooed away from a till in Tesco just as I was about to be served and told to join the basket only queue with four people in it. The person on the till was severely disabled and couldn’t actually lift the items to put them through the scanner, utterly ridiculous. Never use Tescos now, it’s less convenient to use other stores but my god are they better.
