Getting a Job: Channel Four Next Tuesday.

with 20 comments

If anyone unemployed enjoys being a lab-rat then they will love the latest Channel Four programme: here.

The country’s top recruitment expert, Emma Harrison, and self-proclaimed political maverick Ray Lewis go head to head to prove that they know the best way to tackle a problem that’s plagued governments for decades: unemployment.

For Ray Lewis, Gang Tsar and Director of Eastside Young Leaders Academy, which helps disaffected youngsters get back on the straight and narrow, there’s only one way to get long-term unemployed back to work: ‘To keep them on track they need a strong and firm hand.’

Emma’s approach is to work with people: ‘I walk by their side, hold their hand and we go on a journey resulting in them getting a job that transforms their lives.’

Emma and Ray both select a member of the public for each other, someone who has been unemployed for over 18 months. They then work on their new client, agreeing that the best method will be the one that finds their client the highest paid job.

Emma helps 21-year-old John, who has never had a job and lives with his parents on a council estate in Leyton. Going to prison has become a real possibility for John and now he says he wants to turn his back on his criminal past.

Ray’s disciplinarian regime has been successful in transforming the lives of young men at this Academy in the East End, but how effectively will his boot camp methods work with 48-year-old unemployed Dave, who hasn’t had a job for over two years and feels that he’s already exhausted all avenues?

Ray Lewis ”

Former London deputy mayor Ray Lewis has been given a new City Hall role, two years after he resigned amid claims of financial irregularities.

London mayor Boris Johnson has recruited Mr Lewis to help stop young men from troubled backgrounds being drawn into gang violence.

The former mayor resigned as deputy mayor for youth in July 2008.

Emma Harrison needs no introduction to many readers of this site.

But for those who know nothing of her fragrant self:

  1. Who the **** is Ray Lewis?! Sounds like some muppet who couldnt hack his job and had to resign (or be forced out)

I love where this programme is going (from the snippets above)… some young criminal who also is unemployed, living at his parents on a council estate and who has never ever worked… all of a sudden decides he no longer wants to be a criminal who also is sponging off the state and wants to get a job…

These sort of programmes are an insult to the millions of unemployed out there, being completely aimed at the audience of the noble middle and upperclass taxpayer who are lucky to have never been out of work for any great period of time and disrespects the unemployed because the Government has drummed it into their heads that most benefit claimants are benefit scroungers/thiefs/fraudsters and those who are not the former, are workshy people with no intention of working.

Whats the problem? Lack of (sustainable) job creation and the Government intefering in where it wants the country to go rather than let business run itself. There is absolutely no purpose of getting at the unemployed for whether they were unlucky to be laid off or redundant, left school or further education without securing a job, or whether they were sacked or left their job by other means; the fact is the majority of people are seeking employment regardless of how they got unemployed and the jobs aren’t there on a large enough scale for most people to get a job. Yes the job adverts exist and people get interviews, but for each specific vacancy for however many vacancies required, there will only be one successful candidate for each position available.

Employment and unemployment are rather push-pull. If say tomorrow 2000 people resigned from their job, 6000 were sacked and 1300 were made redundant…. 9300 new unemployed people will be created (whether or not they will claim benefit) and only 1300 people will be left unemployed on this simple model basis… because 8000 positions need to be filled and this will come from the pool of unemployed people or those who already have a job (where such position will then need to be filled by the same means). This isn’t a perfect model example as in reality more variables will exist such as people on temporary or fixed term contracts etc. but regardless of what you think when the Government has quoted millions of jobs have been created over the years… many more must have gone.

Other factors such as immigration and population growth are factors too but its the Governments job to cater for them. Statistics on immigration clearly shows that although migrants take up jobs in our labour market, it would be silly to point the finger of blame there as the problem is much deeper.

I have personally pulled apart the Jobcentre efforts to get people jobs… their system although the number of vacancies are high per month has been widely open to abuse. This distorts the Labour Market. It shouldnt be about quantity but quality (as in real vacancies)… it would be strange but I wouldnt be too bothered if I used the jobpoints and it returned just 20 jobs… as long as they existed, were actually local and the positions were still available. It seems LEP jobs set a benchmark… Jobcentre Plus check them more and can regulate information about starters etc. (i.e. did the job position ever get filled). Some LEP jobs are a joke though and I have known people to skip them for various reasons.

Anyway, back to this programme… Emma Harrison, strange how many people who will be watching will see the people featured in the programme as fair representation of all unemployed people and pass judgement of how scum they all are and totally overlook the representative featured of A4e the real fraudster of taxpayers money. Oh, sorry of course it has absolutely nothing to do with A4e. A4e Emma is there in her own right because of her experience of working to “help” unemployed people via her taxpayer cash-hungry business called A4e. Oh dear, got me again! Emma harrison is there because she employed rival show star Hayley Taylor who did the A4e Elevate course to single mums. Damn, A4e got in there again. So leaving out A4e totally, what has Emma done that gives her the title of UK top recruitment expert?

Blow your trumpet or what?! Even as A4e owner and chair (?) all she has is a business which leeches taxpayers’ cash and provide below standard “training” courses. A4e “helps” people into work by bullying them into zero hour contracts, to my best understanding unlike rival RiP, A4e isn’t even an recruitment business! They are also, to my bestest (lol) knowledge no longer the UK’s largest welfare to work provider. Emma, to my bestest-bestest (lol x 2) knowledge have no prior experience or qualification in the recruitment industry prior to taking on her fathers business – even with this… was a different industry than one required to be a “top recruitment expert”… but thats the power of TV, a few silly words put together and broadcasted to millions to make them stick!

  2. Goodness, gracious me, not Channel Snore broadcasting this trashy genre of programme again. Channel 4’s original remit was to provide “balance” (though in overall programming, not in the Nicky Campbell % Live Breakfast Show sense) So when can we expect to see a programme portraying the “unemployed” in a more favourable light. If Channel Snore continues down this road I would suggest that the time has come to re-consider this so-called broadcaster’s taxpayer subsidy.

    Who dares swindle?
SAS siege hero trains benefit fraud-busters

BENEFITS bosses have declared war on fiddling scroungers – by calling in SAS heroes to hunt them down.

They have drafted in ex-special forces and secret service aces to train benefit fraud investigators in the covert tracking and surveillance skills honed against the IRA and the TALIBAN.

It’s a drastic measure for the Department for Work and Pensions in a bid to claw back the £1BILLION a year lost to cheating claimants.

In the vanguard is ex-SAS hero Pete Winner – a veteran of the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege in London, when it was liberated from Arab militants.

He said: “My targets used to be killers and terrorists – now they are people who try to cheat us all.

“I learned my skills in Northern Ireland and the Middle East. They are now being passed on to DWP staff to catch the benefits cheats.”

He added: “I fought with men who gave their lives for the British way of life and find it sickening some people in society will just take, take, take.”

Pete, 60, parachuted into the South Atlantic in the Falklands War. Now he hunts bogus claimants of disability allowance and housing benefit.

Using SAS skills, fraud-busters have nailed a string of cheats, including Martin Prichard and Linda and Terence Coley whose cases are outlined below.

A key weapon is quick wits – never more so than when drug dealers in Birmingham turned on Pete and his team out on a training mission.

The menacing gang targeted a young trainee who they saw talking into her walkie-talkie, accusing her of being a cop.

Pete – who works for specialist private security firm AMA Associates which recruits experts specially from MI5, MI6 and the Special Forces – stepped in to prevent bloodshed.

He gave the thugs his “legend” – cover story – that they were property developers looking for buy-to-let homes. Instead of a walkie-talkie, he produced a voice recorder.

The veteran told us: “We had to be prepared to bluff our way out – the quickest lesson I learned on the streets of Belfast.

  5. If you add to the figures of jobless benefit scroungers the number of people on wages and salaries who are doing jobs of no value or benefit to society you would probably include most of the adult population.

Huge numbers of civil servants and municipal employees do little or no work for inflated salaries, pensions and benefits.

    So Angry

    • So Angry: “Huge numbers of civil servants and municipal employees do little or no work for inflated salaries, pensions and benefits”.

Your talking out your arse. I’ve been a civil servant for two different government departments and also worked in the private sector for a major high street bank. So I’m talking from expereince.

Where do you get the “huge numbers from”? Sure there are chief execs on 6 figure salaries and a few others doing well. But to say “huge numbers” is just ridiculous!

  6. Do not forget that there were once plans to put DWP staff into some gp surgeries to give advice to the unemployed and other benefit claimants on their options.

  7. What a load of Bullshit, for a start who ever wrote this article needs to learn that Iranians arn’t Arabs eg “a veteran of the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege in London, when it was liberated from Arab militants”.

If the SAS are so great how come they haven’t found Bin Laden yet? and Britain is running away from Iraq and Afghanistan? And who can forget the utter balls up that British Intelligance got into in Russia trying to protect British Gas workers from the Chechen Maffia which saw the Chechens run rings round them especialy when it turned out the private security organisation hired to protect the workers from Chechen extortion were the same Chechens in uniforms…anyhow the British Gas workers still got whacked and the British “tacticly “ran away as usual.

I doubt if the boy wonder will be tracking down to many Chechen dole scroungers in case they track him down first.

    • I always thought that Bin Laden was just a model at some US base in the middle east who was paid by the US military.

Whether you believe in the war or think it was just for oil… its ironic how the less important Saddam Hussein who we know was an established dictator was found and hanged whereas the most wanted OBL was never found even though on multiple occassions he “just got away” maybe meters.. lets analyse the efforts… the Americans kill more innocent civilians than terrorists, probably kill more of their own soldiers than the enemy, they also are very “overkill”…

      * They police in numbers… 20 police cars where in the UK one or two is enough for a common thief.

      * The two infamous Atomic bombs – lets leave out the bullshit that they ended the war and brought peace… think about the inocent people caught up in this and slaughtered.

      etc.

Anyway, back to my point. If they caught Osama… there would be no reason to continue the war… however, with OBL gone the terrorist organisation wouldnt fold.

With OBL out of the way heavy criticism on why the war is still going on when the top man had been killed would jeopardize the entire “campaign”. Just my thoughts, probably talking bullshit again…

      • I’m tired of the whole flawed imperialist trip, enough is enough.

I’m not happy about EU expansion it should never have let in the last lot of states the gap was to big, we are meant to benefit as well instead it just seems Britains role in the EU is to hand out more overseas aid to begging borderline states.

First we get stuck with Poland (laughably refferd to by Russian P-takers as “The Thick Man of Europe” now it looks like we are going to get Turkey the Sick man in Europe as well.

      • I am not happy with the EU – its entirely pointless, trade had always worked between countries hundreds of years before the EEC/EC/EU was created.

The EU has too much power over member states, its about time the UK and Germany pulled out… lets see if France has enough time to then pull out before it collapses.

The EU has destroyed us as a country and even where unemployment is concerned, excluding the right for other EU people to work here etc., all the expense of redtape created where EU was responsible for… cost businesses billions which in turn means (especially for the smaller businesses) less money for staff.

  10. getting a job in the uk is extremely difficult and near on impossible the amount of applications received for one vacancy often amounts into three figures’,jobs that are available on the directgov site are still listed and have been filled, certainly also the local paper has very few vacancies and these are for certain sectors, the job centre is fond of telling people to look for alternative work but when the lack of experience emerges after applying they are very quite on the matter.the country faces a huge problem of unemployed people, trained workers from areas like Latvia are taking advantage of the lack of investment made in the uk workforce that has left many without skills, also areas like poland have greatly benefited locally there’s a minibus that has what appears to be eastern european language plastered over the sides, the company also appears to be a contract services’ provider it would not be unreasonable to think that they had a certain background of people in mind when selecting candidates.this does nothing for the moral of the population increasingly beleaguered and and at a loss.
