TNG Ipswich: How do we get there?

with 20 comments

So many people in Ipswich may have got  an invite to attend Flexible New Deal at TNG.

TNG which stands for Training Network Group or more to the point Trainee Network Group. Maybe the company should be called NGT (Network Group in Training) as even though they are part of a bigger company (Avanta) and have landed huge Government contracts to deliver Flexible New Deal – they are the most incompetent useless unprofessional dim wits ever!

Before you see this as a rant against the Flexible New Deal provider, read on and see how poor their methods of communication are.

We can hear an TNG employee stating:

How come only those who came by train had arrived?

How to find us

First small point to make is how unprofessional such directions are on the basis that they are printed on site with thin paper and not professionally produced. They have secured a large contract so there is nothing to suggest why they wouldn’t get it printed professionally in the same way businesses print letterheads, leaflets, compliment slips and business cards. After all the Flexible New Deal guidance booklet from TNG was printed professionally to a good standard. You might be shocked to realise that professionally printed documents in bulk can be cheaper than buying ink cartridges and toner while doing it yourself. This also includes the delivery of the item.

I can’t help but think I could have done a better job on it myself. Certain print has been lost due to minimum margins their printer couldn’t handle i.e. its not edge to edge printing. TNG is also hooked on hideous arrows – there are 11 faded arrows going across the top of the direction sheet – a pattern of 4 different colours occurs although due to it being of an odd number one colour is missed off the end of having its fair share. What do the 11 arrows mean? Are there 11 stages? Flexible New Deal is for 12 months so can’t be due to duration. There is also a silly blue dividing line. At the top has a telephone number and a place for a fax number (e.g. “Fax:” – without a number in it i.e. why include it?).

The document is poorly spaced out – at the bottom right hand corner is a poor parody of the Nike trademark tick and TNG’s logo alongside Jobcentre Plus. At the far bottom left is their web address http://www.flexiblenewdeal.info which they appear to be very proud about – even though .info domains cost 50p hence their popularity with spammers and scammers. Going on the website gets worse with even more arrows and hardly any information about Flexible New Deal so kinda misleading especially when this site alone has far more information. At the bottom of the website reads “Website design by Avanta Marketing Department” – they clearly know nothing about marketing or about web design neither. As a general rule of thumb when you exceed £80,000 annual turnover you need a professionally designed website – it is a must! Avanta clearly exceeds that by a fair amount! Back to the document…

Below is an OCR representation of the TNG “How to find us” directions document.  Please Note:

Criticism of Directions

By Train

These directions are not too bad. What I would note is this is rather misleading as past the roundabout the road curves right – this is not Princes Street! Princes Street continues towards the left (it is a left at the “T” Junction than a sharp right). Wolsey House is the place where YMCA Training used to be.

By Car

Landmarks? To the best of my Knowledge the River Gipping goes from Stowmarket up to Stoke Bridge in Ipswich – where from there becomes the River Orwell – the specific part is called New Cut.

By Bus

Ipswich Unemployed Action has contacted the bus operator First Group who has specified that neither bus routes 63-65, 75-77 and 87-88 stop at Ipswich Train Station.

We have provided an aerial mapped route map for these bus services (thanks to Carl Berry – point to point, stops are accurate the lines between them wont be):

63 (not from Leiston) – 6465 (stops at Rendlesham – very far from Leiston) – 75767787 (Stowupland but goes to Stowmarket) – 88

The direction then assumes you got a train therefore must come out of the station. Towards the left of Princes Street bridge is Ranelagh Road and to the right is Burrell Road. Obviously they now send you to a different place to the Princes Street office.  It ends stating “If you come by car, parking is available.” well.. didn’t you realise the person was coming by bus when you wrote the directions? There isn’t parking available for their other premises as far as I am aware.

From Jobcentre Plus

This assumes that you are a) leaving jobcentre plus via Silent Street and not the other path and b) that you are suicidal. Again these directions are to the wrong place, poor typos, “Bridge”‘ should be in lowercase etc.  Again it ends stating “If you come by car, parking is available.” well.. didn’t you realise the person was assumingly walking (“with your back” and the fact that Silent Street is a one way road so you couldn’t go right by car) when you wrote the directions?

Sanctions

Jobseekers on Flexible New Deal can be sanctioned for following these directions when attending the wrong place means they failed to turn up.

Scanned Copy

A copy of the scanned document (including a map) can be found on Flexible New Deal Scandal.

Lets not criticise their letters (which again is not a proper letterhead) and full of mistakes.

  1. […] Flexible New Deal: TNG Complaint – we dont know how to get there Another TNG Complaint […]

  2. One bit of advise I would offer after my dealings with TNG is to try and make sure all your upcoming appointments are issued to you in advance during your fortnightly meeting with your advisor and that these are entered on the appointment card that you will be given.

My local TNG are just phoning people out of the blue and telling them to attend a training workshop on a certain date without providing anything in writing. A couple of times now they have given me incorrect dates to attend, but luckily in both my cases I was given an appointment card with the dates on them to prove they had made a mistake.

    • We are aware of at least one person given the wrong time – instead of 11 AM it was listed as 11 PM.

Please notice how far spaced “A” and “P” is on the keyboard… apart from “Q” it is the furthest away from any other alphabetical character.

  3. Our ‘local’ TNG appointment office for Ipswich is in Norwich, which makes this yet another cause of problems.

    • I noticed that. Is it really impossible to sort everything out locally? Rather silly I think.

  4. Worth noting, TNG in Ipswich subcontract out to our old friends – the YMCA.

    • Hi Andy

I am aware of this but unsure what elements of Flexible New Deal is subcontracted out to YMCA Training.

Does anyone have a clue what services YMCA provide to TNG?

  5. “Does anyone have a clue what services YMCA provide to TNG?”

I was told by someone at TNG that it’s going to be like the old New Deal programme only on more of a one-to-one basis rather than being in a class with loads of other people.

  6. I don’t know yet. The bloke from TNG phoned me yesterday and cancelled my previously arranged interview saying that some people were being sent off to the YMCA while others would remain with them. But they were vague – to be exact didn’t say at all – about what was going to happen.

    Not a good sign.

Such is the price the government is willing to pay for hiving off the unemployed to companies and groups like the YMCA with extremely contestable competency.

    • It is disgusting. What about transparency of courses etc.? Why cant participants be told whats going to happen?

I remember being on a course delivered by YMCA Training prior to New Deal and it involved regular travel in a minibus… the problem is we were never told where we were going.

When questioning them about it, the response was conform or else… and get in and you will find out when you get there.

I see nothing has changed. I thought to myself that TNG didnt have adequate resources to deliver Flexible New Deal it seems they will probably cherry pick the good ones with them and ship the rest off to YMCA for a very hard time.

  7. how about spending more time looking for a job , rather than picking holes in every tiny bit of letter or website. TNG are new to providing Flexible New Deal and all companies have teething problems, most of which have now been sorted.

    • Fair comment however TNG has provided the original New Deal too with terrible results.

I think you would be upset to have got the rural bus service etc. and end up at Old Cattle Market (not the Train Station) and then have to walk to the Docks to find out they aren’t even located there.

In the meanwhile you the jobseeker is likely to be sanctioned for failing to attend while been given the mess around (while Wolsey House is rather close to Old Cattle Market).

  8. There seem to be serious problems developing about TNG in Ipswich – people having interviews cancelled as a moment’s notice being just one. When I was waiting to sign on on this morning, a member of staff registered some people’s complaints and said they appear to ‘have contact issues’.

    • Thanks for keeping us all updated on developments. This is probably a minor issue as like with New Deal Jobcentre Plus isn’t really interested in complaints from Jobseekers…

I am sure JCP will look into it and respond to the complaint saying there was issues beyond their control i.e. a member of staff was ill etc.

      January 5, 2010 at 5:43 pm

    • As its a new contract (although TNG were a provider for a previous similar contract) under a pilot… it is expected to be some issues.

Jobcentre Plus will just advise them of such and TNG will say they will work on it.

  9. when you take the questionaire at the start the result will place you into bands a-e.bands 1 and 3 stay with tng while 2 and 4 go to ymca…programmes should be similar, small workshops, one on one support. band 5 is used in conjunction with other bands as it uses voluntary organisations to help with things like drugs, alcohol etc…this SHOULD be explained to you at the induction

  10. Well ive been and found them to be very helpful the main people who moan about these sort of things are the ones who dont want to work and are happy collecting their top up money and numerous other benefits i however am not, theyve helped me with a new CV to which i have already had an interview from more than i ever got whilst sitting in the job centre every 2 weeks. Well keep moaning but after 52 more weeks of moaning about a company that is clearly giving more help than the norm, wait until those still out of work are working for their benefits!! Maybe less moaning and more impetus into working with them would help(This isnt to everyone) Help yourselves also!
